My wife and I are fanatics of Flee Markets, I found today at a flee market here in New Jersey for 3.00 dollars a beautiful Dawes Galaxy, the owners were English her husband had hip surgery and just wanted to get rid of bike, I'm going to try to see if I can fix it up a little more.
I bought my bike in 1980 and it is still going strong. Versatile for touring commuting and I even took it over the alps. OK, the mudcards have fallen almost to bits. Light steal frame is strong as an ox. Balance is beautiful. Best bike ever!
In those days Dawes were a small English company that hand made all their bikes to a very high standard.
It is a pleasure to ride. It felt expensive when I bought it and I could not afford the Super Galaxy (basically the same bike with slightly better trimmings) but it has repaid my investment many times over.
Always lock it and cover up the Dawes and Reynolds double-butted frame logos, to avoid it getting stolen.
Company was taken over. The bikes are still made and sold in the UK. I am not sure if they are still being made to quite the same high standard.
I would highly recommend buying a 25 year old frame Dawes Galaxy bicycle.
2000 model bought in 2001 so heavily discounted but still not great value for money. Most comfortable bike I have owned. Shimano SIS Megarange gearset very low end of the price range but has lasted ok. Covered about 6000 miles, mostly commuting journeys 3 miles but a lot of journeys over 50 miles including some hard training sessions. Tyres, chain and rear gear cluster changed 18 months ago but all need changing again now, typical cost £65 - 75. Rear rack very poorly welded and replaced under warranty. Headset very poor quality for the price of the bike, painted externals peeled and rusted badly after 18 months. Brake blocks difficult to set up and adjust (cheap Shimano again) so they don't squeal.
Owned for 4 years.
