I have only just recently brought this 1996 220 sdi but am totally impressed. Drives superbly, handlings superb and accelerates well, smoothly and through every gear. Comfortably driving possition with great features for its age and all still functioning (touch walnut veniered dash). To this i've been averaging 55mpg whilst making good use of the turbo. Only downside seems to be a bit of a rust bucket, seen many other 220's and they all seam to have the same problem, especially on rear wheal arches, i guesse they must of run out of cash fitting all the features (elecs. ect) so that they had to use iron around the wheel arches or maybe they could of just add some plastic trim. Anyway for £225 with few probs and 6 months MOT i'm not complaining (now polishing the venier). Good car!!! Never thought i'd say that about a rover!!!
HI, I`VE OWNED A 220 SDi FOR 5 YEARS NOW AND TO BE HONEST IT`S THE BEST CAR I`VE EVER OWNED, AND I`VE HAD A FEW. I`M A MECHANIC BY TRADE AND THE ONLY THING I`VE HAD TO DO ON IT IS GENERAL SERVICING e.g OIL AND FILTER CHANGES,TIMING BELTS ECT. THE ENGINE IN MY OPINION IS BOMB PROOF COS I DRIVE IT HARD, VERY HARD, AND IT SEEMS TO LOVE IT.THE HARDER YOU DRIVE IT THE BETTER IT GOES. IT`S DONE 146,000 MILES NOW AND IT SOUNDS AND GOES THE SAME NOW AS THE DAY I BOUGHT IT, (TO BE HONEST, THE WIFE PICKED IT! SHE LIKED THE SHAPE AND COLOUR.I HAD MY DOUBTS AT THE TIME BUT IN THIS CASE SHE WAS RIGHT.) THE ONLY REAL TROUBLE I`VE HAD WITH IT IS THE REMOTE KEY FOB PLAYED UP ONCE WHICH COST 80 QUID AND THE CLOCK IS DODGEY AND STILL IS! THATS IT... AND OH YES THE BOOT IS A BIT SMALL. BELIEVE IT OR NOT, IT`S STILL USING THE ORIGINAL EXHAUST AND CLUTCH!!!!!!! THE ONLY ADVICE I CAN GIVE YOU IS IF YOUR THINKING ON GETTING ONE, TRY AND GET THE 220 SDi. THE i BEING ALL IMPORTANT AS YOU GET A LOT MORE POWER!!! I`VE DRIVEN THE SD`S AND THE D`S,AND THEY ARE OK BUT NO COMPARISON TO THE SDi. ANYWAY, GOTO GO, ALL THE BEST DAVE;-)
