Mine is a 1995 1200. It has 152'000 miles (not K's)-(what are K's anyway) on the clock. Its fuel economy at 50 mph is around 48-50 mpg-more on m'way rides. It has had a few oil changes and tyres and disc pads on front brakes, timing belts, but not many. The interior has kept pretty good, exterior is pretty good (but for other drivers in parking lots). It has always started and been a dream to drive (compared with some newer cars I hired on holiday). Worst problems were front wheel bearings (several), if left alone only get noisey, with no threat to road safety what so ever- - and 1 head "skim" & gasket. I also "had" an American wife who did her best to destroy the poor little car (steering wheel was always on the wrong side). I am a mechanic and do all my own repairs (thank heaven).

economy & compfort, reliability.

Bought my clio when it was a year old, found the clutch really difficult to get used to but i loved the look of the car so stuck with it. No problems until the warrantly expired. Since then the sunroof has rattled constantly, ignition coils have had to be replaced twice, i have on numerous occasions had to call the AA during bad weather because the coils get "damp" and the car becomes impossible to drive. Various issued with warning lights coming on when there is nothing wrong with the car. Climate Control system has given up and last night the gearbox decided to die and i've now got a £800 bill to have it repaired. I will geting rid of this car very soon, it's caused me nothing but grief!

Fun to drive, looks nice

This is our second Clio and we have finally learned our lesson. The thing is designed to fall apart and cost you a lot of money after 5 years even though we've had it dealer serviced all that time. The electrics won't let our car go above 20 mph and we've been quoted £600+ by the dealer to fix it. We've had it independently assessed and the computer fault is different every time.

Get another make. Don't buy into the built in obsolecence of the Renault Clio.

I have got to say its poor on the road because as a Reanult is not often there, prefering the garage. Renault customer service is very poor. I would never buy a renault again, they might look good, drive well and have spacious interiors but they are just not reliable and the dealers are not very helpful.

had the car 3 years before having to write it off
superb model .. 1200 cc and real little kicker ..
did numerous long jouneys in it with out issue .. as a city car it was easy to navigate tight streets
safety was a factor in its purchase and on a stormy night it proved its worth with a double 360 and full roll with out one scratch to its occupants .. thankfully this was all completed at less than 50 mph
so cheers to renault .. long term fan here ..

Bought a Clio 1.4 Alize, low mileage, in very good nick recently. Looks great, drives well and has plenty of features. Ultimately very disappointed though as a number of little gripes are starting to add up. Squeaky brakes, faulty heater matrix (it's been a cold month's motoring!), annoying rattling sunroof and now I'm informed that the safety features (seatbelt tensioners/airbag) are inoperable. Reckon I got ripped off by unscrupulous dealer who told me it was a faulty dash light and nothing to worry about.Nothings covered by the useless warranty I was given either! I'd read up a lot before buying a Clio and thought it would be a good move, experience has suggested otherwise!

had a clio 1.2 (dark blue)1997 p reg as my first had no problems with it at all- loved it to bits but unfortunatly, 3months down the line i plowed it into the back of a fat shogun jeep at 40mph, got out of the car after forcing the door open without any scratches, just a bit of a brused knee(had it been a punto i was driving- i doubt i would have any legs left-hate punto's-can u tell). got myself a 1998(old shape)r reg 1.2 clio now, its the same as my first one except its black and has a leaking sunroof which affects the inobilisor thing occasionally-but hey ho, the clio did save my legs and maybe more, would recomend them to any one(especially if u put alloys on them- looks so fat) my second one has been going strong for a year now, and lets face it they will kick a puto's ass any day.

could've been great, but let down by feeling under powered in its class, poor road holding around corners (scary sometimes in the wet). But annoying engine problems such as faulty fuel flow and CPU, and squeeky brakes.

A recurring problem with many a Clio is the failure of the heater blower. Three family members have had this problem. The blowers fail to blow one one or more speeds. This is a simple repair. First remove both wipers. Then remove six screws holding the plastic cowling (the piece under the windsceen), remove the cowling. The blower is now visible. Follow the wiring where it enters the plastic cover and pull this plug out. Unclip the piece that the plug joins onto and remove the resistor housing. This is the part that needs replacing, cheap from scrap yards. Hey presto, job done. ps if anyone knows what value this resistor is please let me know, cheers.

i just bought mine and it drives great. It a shame about the lack of heat.It is december and the heater is useless.i went to renault and they said it's the heater matrix but to change it requires takeing
out the dashbord and the engine...What!!!
And the speado cables all up and down so if your's doin 30 it looks like 35 or 25
I use the rev counter....Apart from that and everytime i switch on the lights the radio asks for it's code....
I uses to have a rover 400 but times are hard.I just thought that heating was essential not a luxory....Great Car

This is a proper hot hatch. Most cars seem to have "16v" as part of their names these days, but this the first 16v hot hatch. It has bags of pedigree besides this.

Having first dabbled with turbo technology in the Clio 16v's predecessor, the infamous 5 GT Turbo, Renault settled on an all-new 1764cc 16 Valve engine design for its hot hatches. The engine debuted in 1989 in the 19 16v and was seen in the very first Clio rally cars in 1990.

The Clio 16v (and later Williams) were the homologated cars that came from Renault Sport's Group A rally programme. The regular Clio rally car (homologated as the Clio 16v), the Maxi (wide arch non-homologated special) and finally 2.0 rally car (homologated as the Williams) totally cleaned up the Front Wheel Drive categories and still hold many tarmac stage records.

Anyway, you probably want to know what the car is like! Well, it's a similar deal to the regular Mk1 (1991-98) Clio in its general build and quality; so it's on the border of goodish, but expensive when it goes wrong. The 16v shares the chassis and main pillars, but has flared arches (none of this bolt-on nonsense a la Saxo VTR/S), wider bumpers and its disctinctive bonnet bulge/scoop.

The car hanldles very well; moving the 205 GTi concept on in that it's more predictably on the limit though retains the wonderful turn in and grip of its Peugeot predecessor. 0-60 comes in about 7.7 secs (book time) and on to 130mph. A word of warning though - some seem to be a lot faster than this, some a bit slower; probably to do with the care the car has recieved. The engine is quite un-animated below 4,500 rpm; in fact it feels no faster than a regular hatch until you open her up. Once up in the revs though, the car is devastatingly quick in a way that no other hot hatch of the era ever was.

The car is not complex to maintain, but it has a big engine in a small space. Add typically high Renault parts prices and maintenance becomes expensive. This is the main reason that most 16v's are still out of the hands of boy racers (although remarkably high residuals add to this).

The interior is quite acceptable, although will creak and rattle with age - not really a problem when the car is so dynamically gifted. The 16v's seats are quite wonderful, although as with the latter-day 172, you seem to sit "on" the car, rather than feel totally a part of it. Some of this is also to do with the offset pedal positioning - a curious French invention designed to prevent simultaneous braking and accelerating. My 16v has the desireable leather option - the front seats are straight from the 19 16v and hence are even more comfortable. This option reduces rear space even further.

There are many problems experienced with the 16v, but none are inherrent to the model. Well cared-for cars will easily see in six-figure mileages.

I have owned and been very pleased with the 2 x 1200 cc Renault Clio's a year ago I moved up to a 1400 cc Clio and apart from an initial annoying rattle from the elecric sunroof (fixed under warrantyI'm very pleased with the looks, space, comfort and all round reliability of this latest Clio
At a middle price range of £11,000 I feel this represents reasonable value
I will definately consider another Clio when I need to replace my car

I love the shape of the 92 clio,I dont like the newer models.
I find it easy to drive and it holds the road like glue and goes like a bat out of hell with its single point injection which is just as good as multi point!.I managed to get my 1.8 rt for £580 with 13 months mot and 4 months tax.Its in good condition and im going to spend some money on it.
Im thinking of getting a k&n air filter 57i induction kit, some alloys, and a rear spoiler.
Overall i love this car.
If you see one going for the right price its definetly worth the money.
It impresses the girls and shocks people when you take em on straights.
Ive only just had it so ive had no problems so far.
