Picked up my 2.3E by chance, it was advertised on a mountain bike website! Very much enjoying it so far, bit heavy on petrol but the 5 pot engine makes a lovely growl, feels super solid still, might look out for a diesel estate some time.
I have owned my Audi 80 TDi for nearly 3 years & what a great car, 50-55mpg, never broken down, good midpower for corners & overtaking. If you are looking for a cheap running car that is fun to drive, try the TDi.
Bought a G-plate 1.8 S a couple of years ago, had 136000 on the clock when I bought it-ran it for two years and put another 24k on the clock. The only maintenance I carried out was to replace two headlamp bulbs, one oil change and changed the pads!! It never let me down. Absolutely faultless to drive, all the electrics (including mirrors) worked perfectly. Surprisingly quick for a 1.8, and it sounded good too! A little too much body roll in high speed corners, but the ride was extremely refined for a car of its age. I only let it go 'cos I moved to London and didn't need a car anymore. Would recommend one without hesitation. It looked great too (Aubergine metallic) and had no rust whatsoever! Find a good one and keep it!!
Actually this slot should read 1986-1994 as mine was L reg 1993. I had the 1.9diesel S which had the alloy boot fin and uprated steering wheel. What a superb motor. Totally reliable and great to drive even for an old car. I bought it in 2001 and sold it in 2002 having added 26000miles to the already high milage clock and all it cost me was £300 plus maintainance costs of about another £400 for mot purposes.
I've got a 1987 1.8s. Bought new 10 miles down the road from me. I'm the third owner with 81,000 miles on the clock! Never let me down yet. Sailed through it's last MoT. No rust anywhere! Engine could do with a bit more oomph, but adequate. Boot is small. Makes Fords look cheap and nasty (which the are!) Get a good one, and there are plenty around, and it will go on forever. Don't buy spares from Audi, go to German and Swedish. All parts easily obtainable.

Audi 80 1.8s, got it for two years now, goes each year to the dealer and returns as new, relatively cheap maintenance, just renew what ever is wrong at once and it will stay in perfect condition for ever. Great looks inside and outside !
