Had a 1.4 zr on a 2001, bright yellow some scumbag keyed it down one side had to get it painted then the dreaded headgasket problem, trim was a nightmare, pleased to get rid of it absolute nightmare.
I bought my 160 zr in 2005 and have had no problems whatsoever from it.This car is a mk 1 model with 26,500 miles now. I dont use it very often as im trying to keep the mileage down. Its on an 04 plate and is in very good condition.I change the oil every 3ooo miles and all the fluid levels are checked twice a week regardless of mileage. It starts first time on the key and is very reliable. When the engine has warmed up the performance is blistering and will see off most 2.0 litre cars and some bmw x5s. It is not a standard car as i have done a few little tweeks to it to improve its performance.
I Have Recently Purchased a Yellow MG ZR 160. And i love it, I am only 21 and being able to afford a car of this speed! Is Brilliant! But all great things have a draw-back! I was sitting in traffic and my head gasket has blew and am not impressed, the car has only done 38000 miles and this has happened, i had a 306 DTS for two years which had done 180000 miles never had one problem with it! I never thrash or race it because it's my baby and i have had fork out £500 to fix, heard that the k-series enging has common head gasket problems after i bought it typical! Anyone who is purcahsing a ZR check the car right out for any engine problems before buying.
I've had a 105+ for just over a year now. In that time I've covered 20,000 miles with no problems at all!
Servicing costs are very reasonable when compared with other manufacturers, and the 1.4 engine has ample performance considering it's size yet provides frugal economy.
It's an excellent looking car, the only downsides being the lack of mod cons such as air conditioning - but how often do you need that in the UK climate?
Well have now had my ZR120 for two years an it has been completely reliable, it pulls like a train and have had none of the mechanical worries like head gasket failure as this was rectified by my model year and with these models as long as you drive them properly you will have less chance of it going! Round corners its a fantastic car and just keeps me smiling it tells you through your backside what its doing unlike some wannabe hot hatches like Golf GTi's etc (mk3 on) I cant recommend this car more its a brilliant drive and turns heads all the time i love it!
I dont know where the above got their cars from but I have had very little trouble with my ZR 160.
There have been a couple of problems with the bodykit but thats pretty much it.
Car is so much fun to drive, it just keeps on pulling. The handling is firm and solid.
Looks SO good in yellow that even after 3 years it still turns heads.
The head gasket problem was identified and solved. Those cars that have blown their's have most probably been treated badly. The way to avoid the problem is to not rev the heck out of it while it is cold but then the same stands for any engine.
Well, we are now at the end of the 3 year warranty and yet again the car is in the garage at 48,000 miles. This time it is having a new sunroof fitted as the old one started leaking; the boot door locks are being replaced as the bootlid has developed a tendency to open of its own accord on bumpy roads (not helped by the harsh suspension); and they are desperately trying to find out what is casuing the car to idle unevenly. The revs have started fluctuating wildly between 300-1500 rpm at idle. The diagnostic machine, however says there is no problem...
To cap it all, MG Rover had the cheek to send me a letter saying that my warranty was about to expire and would I like to extend it? I have written back saying that after all the problems I have had with it, I am expecting THEM to extend the warranty free of charge! No reply yet...
I cannot stress to you strongly enough. DO NOT BUY AN MG ZR!!!! They are truly awful cars and if Rover carries on producing them, they deserve to go bankrupt! AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!
Update to the MG ZR story above... having already had the head gasket replaced, we are now on 30,000 miles and the engine has started ticking loudly. I took it to my local Rover dealer, and it turns out that the car is suffering from ''piston slap''. All this means that the car has to go into the garage again for a whole week to have the engine stripped down and the pistons and other bits replaced under warranty. My Rover dealer said it is the 6th MG ZR that they have had to do this to since they started selling them. Thank god my three year loan is paid off in September as it will be going straight up for sale when the warranty runs out... I just hope that somebody out there will be stupid enough to buy it!!!
I have an 2 year old MG ZR 1.8. It has done 26,000 miles and has just spent a week in the garage having the head gasket replaced!! I can't believe that on a 2 year old car with such low mileage. Not only that, but the boot hinges are already starting to go rusty and are wating to be repaired, all the MG badges have been replaced due to them starting to delaminate and the front bumper skirt is starting to come away from the bumper on one side. Oh, and don't forget the numerous rattles inside!
Overall, it is a very poor quality vehicle, and I will be selling it the moment the warranty expires. I shan't be buying another Rover.
If MG Rover's cars are still this bad, it's no wonder they are in such dire financial straits.
Owned for 2 years.
