The GPz400S - water cooled model (note the lower case 'z'. Air cooled models had a capital 'Z' in the prefix)
What an amazing bike! I imported 3 of them new back in 1988 with the intention of putting together a race team. Following the failure of that venture, they have all been kept in the family. A couple of tech issues with stated specs. They actually produce 86BHP and have a drum rear brake, not 50BHP and rear disc as stated on many web pages. Anyway, these days parts are getting scarse, but that's not a major issue. In 20 years I have never had to replace engine parts, chassis parts or anything else major. The usual service issues such as pads, oil, filters etc every 6 months has seen me well from new. 2 bikes are still on original shocks and cans, the other had a new rear shock and new cans after a rather arduous ride around the alps and southern europe last summer.
The GPz400S has been a very happy bike under all conditions. I've found Pirelli Strada's to be the most suitable tyre for all round use. The bike is equally happy to chug around town at a lazy 25mph or flying along, knee down at 125mph.
Do beware though that you must treat these bikes with respect. They will remind you who is in charge if you mis-treat them.
I could go on for ever and a day raving about and praising these bikes. If you want a cheap, realiable, fun bike, GET ONE!

The GPZ400S was made for the Japanese market, where smaller cc'd bikes are very popular. It is based on the popular 500S we get here in the UK, however the motor isn't just a sleeved down unit - it was made for the job. Which goes someway to explain why it is such great fun! Keep the revs high and it goes like a scalded cat, but if you want to take it easy the bike is just as happy chugging along at sedate speeds. The build quality seems pretty good - mine is on its original exhaust which has lasted 9 years so far... Spares, etc aren't a problem as most things are interchangeable with the 500.
If you fancy a cheap runabout that has a chassis and engine to make you grin check the GPZ400S out!
