I have a 1984 3.3. A beast of a car! Virtually inpossible to tame and demands great respect, especially on wet roads. Hugely modifiable and very easy to work on compared to alternative exotics. Electrics can be unreliable but faults are usually due to simple things, like slack fuse holders. Heater and aircon motors can sieze and melt! Engine...superb. It is prone to leak oil due to the number of oil pipes and associated joints. 4sp gearbox is not the slickest and syncros can wear. Rebuilt my engine at 100k miles due to oil leaks. Internal condition was excellent, only real wear was in the valve guides, and the valve seats.
The turbo car feels less nimble to drive than the non turbo cars. The turbo has plenty of lag and comes in strongly but not till about 3500-4000rpm. At low revs the engine feels reasonably torquey but otherwise lifeless. Fitting a more modern turbo charger, and aftermarket exhaust system radically improves driveability. 300bhp standard but easy to get around 400bhp with bolt on mods and small increase in boost. (600-700bhp can be had if your pockets are deep enough).
Brake pedal feels a bit "wooden" and needs a good shove but the brakes are perfectly adequate and progressive.
Steering is very precise, the wheel kind of wriggles in your hands as it transmits information about the road surface. Ride is firm but not uncomfortable. Handling is excellent but respect has to be given to the fact that most of the engines weight is BEHIND the rear axle! MPG is about 24 if you are very careful, but if you play expect closer to 15mpg. Has a very solid and unburstable feel.
This is a classic car that has massive character and is very involving to drive. Fortunately its yuppie image of the 80's has faded and most of these cars are now in the hands of enthusiasts. Parts are still easy to obtain, avoid Porsche if at all possible, buy from specialists.
If you are thinking about buying one, do your homework, speak to specialists, and, unless you are very confident, get an inspection done before you buy.
