I recently bought a 1996 YZF600R and am quite pleased with my decision. It's great for people getting into big bikes because it's power delivery isn't too fierce and the riding position isn't bad either. Changing from 1st to 2nd can be an issue but as long as you're not going fast it's usually alright. Fit a race can for a better sound and a small increase in power.
I would definitely recommend this bike to anyone who has recently passed their test or is looking for a bike to commute on with the occasional sunday rideout. They are going ever so cheap nowadays so get one and see what you think.
I owned my Thundercat for 3 years and rode it in all weathers for two of those. It was reliable, comfortable and as my first big bike very easy to ride. Performance wise i reckon it was only slightly behind the R6 I own now and the power was probably easier to use. I toured Scotland on it with all my camping gear and did 500 miles one day in complete comfort but could still have fun on the twisty bits. I'm seriously considering another as a touring bike, they're so cheap second hand now, cheaper than same year fazers with less power or weather protection! my only problem with it was the front calipers seized over the winter when I didn't use it but I know now that's easy to prevent. Recommended to anyone, whatever you like doing on a bike.
