i have a 2003 yamaha dt50 n it was DEAD slow when i got it.. embarrasing acceleration and pushing 40mph flatout..
so i got on ebay and bought a full arrow exhaust and sent my bike away to get the pipe fitted proffesionally and to remove a restrictive washer that lay in the front of the pipe.. he told me he was going to put a bigger jet in the carb so the pipe would work at its best .. got it back and she was soo much faster.. acceleration is greatly improved now and i hit 50mph on flat road really quick.. i still have the stock 11tooth front sprocket on the bike and am having allot of trouble finding bigger sprockets for the year of my yamaha..

the sound of the arrow pipe
only rides properly once the engine is good and warm

I had a 1984/85 DT50MX when I was 16 (which, I hasten to add was a bloody long time ago!).
Soon getting bored of the standard top speed (42 Mph if memory serves), I soon invested in possibly the easiest change to gain a higher top-end. I always wanted a 65cc big-bore kit, but as it would invalidate the insurance and I was a good lad at the time (my how things have changed!), I went for the easy option... change the front sprocket!
I'm pretty sure the original was an 11 tooth. As they were so cheap, I invested in several... a 12, 13, 14 & 15.
To cut to the chase, a 14 was probably the best as it always managed about 46-47Mph, though as a kid I weighed next to nothing, I favoured the 15. This gave 48ish-Mph pretty much all the time, but if the wind was in your favour, you'd often crack the fantastic 50Mph mark. I even recall coming out of London on the A3 one day and hitting nearly 60 (registered on the speedo) down a hill, and once it was wound up, it stayed there too. What great memories. Didn't cheer my mate up who had a Honda MT5 (MT50) of about the same age and he couldn't get his to do more than 32 no matter how hard he tried. Poor bloke!

I just want to respond to the Preloved Visitor 11 February 2004. If you did own a new 2003 DT50 it is stil not a classic like the DT50MX.That one on the other hand is reliable, strong, and the parts needed to make it a bit faster are in fact avalaible almost everywhere you just need to know where to look. The new DT50 is boring, ugly, and way overpriced if you're looking for quality and a bit of style. I own a DT50MX myself, a real oldie from '86. I completely renewed the entire bike and it cost me less than the new DT50 and this one looks better too. And all that for an 18 year old dutch girl. How about that!

The DT50 is the worst bike on the planet.it cuts out everytime in the rain, even a slight drizzle. As standard is is about as fast as a buzzboard. The tuning parts cost an absolute bomb if you can even find a store that stocks the performance parts for the DT50(2003)
