I have an '82 Auto 924. I figured on this model as it is probably the only Porsche I could afford to own. She is in black with the large PORSCHE decals on the sides - I'm not sure if they are attracting sneers or admiring glances. By modern standards she is not particularly fast for a 2 litre car and the auto gearbox stunts the performance, but makes for a lovely leisurely relaxed drive. Holding it in 2nd makes for more fun on quiet country roads. The large roof hatch lifts right off, improving the fun when driving as above. Fuel economy is not such fun - I rarely get better than mid 20's mpg, but the tank is huge so 300 careful miles is possible on a tankful.
Tyres are massive and steering I find light compared with a non pas fwd car.
Brakes are excellent which is just as well as there is little or no engine braking, and handling and steering are precise and very user friendly. Seating for front passengers is long and low but only nippers can comforably travel in the back. Load capacity with the rear seat folded down is surprisingly large - car boot sales are possible when a roof rack is added. The car seems bullet proof in most respects (mine is 140k miles and climbing) BUT an untraceable leak in the battery compartment area has played havoc with the electrics, which are mounted in the passenger footwell. There must be a 'fix' for this somewhere - can anyone out there help??
If you like the idea of a classic shaped sports coupe that is completely tame for city driving or the open road - get one soon before they disappear for ever. You wont be sorry.

Having recently bought a 924 for £2500 I have discovered what bomb proof build quality is all about. Mine is in immaculate condition with a f.p.s.h. It handles superbly, is comfortable and can provide a useful amount of room. There are no squeeks or ratttles and it still feels like a proper sports car. If you have come from a modern car the steering will feel heavy (no power steering) the breaks feel hard (drums on the back) and the gear box is like a well oiled rifle. The body is fully galvanised and the performance is not as bad as the 'power boys' would have you believe. There are a few dogs out there so beware - but get a good one and all your friends will wonder why they havn't got a Porsche [Log in to view email]

Much fun to drive - I prefered driving my girlfriend's 924 to my own BMW 535!

The combination of a fully galvanised body and well engineered mechanicals makes this HUGE value for money, as long as you enjoy getting involved in your own servicing. It may not be super fast, but it's still a great handler and lots of fun in the twisties. Also it has the LOOK. (And the badge ;-))
