I drove 505s as taxis for several years and I had my own for 2 years.
Mine was a GTI Family.
They are excellent cars to drive, the square shape and large windows make it very easy to drive in traffic. Binoculars are needed to see the rear window but it is easy to park.
The interior is very poor quality, especially considering it might have to last 300000 miles. The highest I saw was 360 000 miles, over 300 000 of them on the 1st engine and gearbox. All on the forbidden unleaded fuel too! If they suffered from valve recession we never noticed. Most of our cars exceeded 200 000 and most were sold or crashed.
If you consider a 505 check the cooling system carefully. It helps if you have a source of spares. Try not to buy an ex taxi and look for evidence of servicing. They don't like neglect.
Most importantly sell it as soon as the first big bill comes in. Once the bills start you will NOT beat it. It may have 100 000 miles left in it but they will be expensive miles.

I have now had my 1986 505 turbo diesel for 5 years I am the second owner. It has done 450,000km it has had hardly anything requiring doing in that time. The mechanic who services it says the motor will go for another 200,000km but the body will probably give out before then. There is no rust but the electrics will need work soon and the seats are quite worn. The headlight have never been quite right since hitting a kangaroo. Just starting to look for a replacement perhaps a 405 srdt.

The Peugeot 505 GR I own has been extremely reliable, apart from an electronic ignition gremrlin which was ironed out, ie, I removed it. It was a non-genuine part so that had lots to do with the actual problem. Stick to original parts when it comes to electrics, as it's easier to diagnose and rectify. The GR is fairly thirsty for a 2 ltr , 4 cylinder. However, you can't get the reliability, comfort, ride and handling in many cars of its age(1982). I've onwned 2 ltr BMWs, which were faster and more economical, but a bit jittery when pushed into hard, demanding cornering work. The BMW parts were killer expensive compared to the Pug. In Australia, a 505 GR in good condition still commands around 3K, an average to poor 505 GR can be worth as little as a few hundred bucks. My recommendation is that if you're thinking of buying a 505, perhaps a fuel injected version(STI, GTI, Executive) would be a better option for those that want more oomph out of their car. I've driven many luxury vehicles and few compare to the Pug on a dollar for comfort and handling basis. Good luck, but you want need it if you buy a Pug.

The estate is excellent. I have five children and all are seated safely, and comfortably, thanks to all 8 seats facing forward and with belts. The GTI has a better performing engine and will cruise allday at 75mph returning a good 30mpg. I have owned 2 505 estates each as reliable as the other. My first is still running in Africa apparently.
