I have owned a 2001 CR-V ES automatic(wife wanted an small auto 4x4) for the past 5 years and only done 7000 miles since buying it ( no mechanical problems whatsoever, not even a bulb, except new hinges on rear door under warranty from main dealer.) A bit sluggish due to auto gearbox and heavy on petrol, around 20-22mpg in town, which is the main use, can only get 28mpg on a long run at 60-70mph. Would not buy another auto petrol but would go for manual or a diesel model, see no reson to change as body is in excellent condition and no mechanical problems
reliable, comfortable.
heavy fuel consumption, sluggish performance, main dealer servicing expensive

automatic ES model

I submitted a review a year ago and my Honda CR-V is now 11 years old and has done 88,000 miles. Still no major problems arising and this seems to be the universal finding of many CR-V owners. The only trouble in the last year has been an ABS sensor light displaying on the dash necessitating replacement of the sensor - nothing wrong with the ABS. If buying, go for the ES version with Air Conditioning and roof rails - wish I had. A 1996 or 1997 CR-V could be extremely good value - you should be able to pick one up for £1500-£2000 and they tow well, even with the automatic gearbox. I reckon these cars will generally be good even with high mileages on the clock. They appear to have no inherent faults and that helps.
Trouble-free 4x4, well built, good engine, cheap to run
Honda dealers can be a bit pricy on servicing

CR-V LS Automatic
Owned for 5 years.
I bought a 1997 R reg CR-V Auto and it has to be one of the best cars I've owned in forty years of driving. These cars were superbly made and the early pre 2001 model is preferred in many respects than the later version which got a heavier look. The original top hinged rear window and side hinged lower tail gate works well with dogs - you can see that the dogs tails as you close the door on them and it avoids heavy slamming. Have done 35,000 miles without a single mechanical problem - very reliable. The problem for Honda is that in establishing a superb reputation for quality why should one bother to change. I would recommend a CR-V to anyone. Now look at the Freelander comments!
I bought a CRV after having a Saab convertible, and although very different, I loved the Honda. I have horses and I could easily get absolutely everything I needed in. We drove to France in it and it was brilliant. My only problem was finding cheap insurance for it.
Have recently bought this car after my Freelander needed a new engine at 36,000 miles! It is so much better than the Freelander. It drives really well, has loads of extras as standard and a reputation as a reliable car. It doesnt look as good as the Freelander but what good is a car that looks good that doesnt go!

I bought the 2.0SE Sport brand new three months ago and absolutely love it! It drives just like a car and has great acceleration. The only niggle I have is that Honda should either provide a diesel option or a bigger fuel tank, as fuel consumption is quite high.
