I have a Peugeot 309, GL automatic,Its reg is an "L" last year they were made 1993,I have had since then,I never really thought it would be any use to me I was driving a large volvo at the time as I am 6ft 4 tall and large body of thity stone and didnt think Id fit in one, my ex wife had one but wouldnt allow anyone to drive it, it was the fastest small car I had ever seen and rarely had any problems hers was a "H" reg and like mine 1600cc,, so i tried sitting in one at a local garage and pushed seat back and found plenty space, plus what I enjoy is lower rear seat and now its an estate car, come van what i found a real pain as with many cars the spare is underneath, and as I am a disabled driver found it easier just to keep inside the rear and still leaves plenty space,in the time Ive had it, so far only problem I have that nipped my head was the orange diagnostic light comes on and off, AA told me its an petrol economy light, MOTs since have been such things as brake pads, tyres, exhausts the latter is because I stay in hills and have to drive through the farm and as you know farm roads are just ok for landrovers and tractors and now Peugeots, I wouldnt part with my Puggy even if offered a brand new Ferrari, My puggy is reliable, comfy, doesnt rust if you care for, just like any car does, I would have preferred it to have a diesal engine and and look like a GTI, but thats the boy racer in this old man,on a long run I get 40-45mpg and in towns around 28-35mpg,Parts can be found online galore, it has a nice sunroof mettalic body, want to get alloys soon,, Problem jobs to date is renewed the steel waterpipe from radiator found inside Drivers wing, and last week was caught in floods and the water on the main road 3ft deep broke the metal straps holding up rear bumper was a strain against water, and straps were worn obviously, dont expect such things last forever,so need to have renewed, I even bought a new bumper in case it had to be renewed again bought from The Puggy International Forum a driver had one on Ebay recomend that site to answer all peugeot 309 etc problems you may have, so 15 years need it another 15 years and it will outlive me, since im old man hohohoho.roofrack with ski's impresses women. I have a 1989 309 1.3 (the old Horizon engine). The car weighs nothing, and so the performance is actually quite reasonable - it will still eat many modern things up to about 1.2/1.3, and even keep up with a few 1.4's, but either way, it will catch most things in the bends that it can't keep up with on the straight!
Anyway, I got this cheap, with a few niggling problems (electrical gremlins etc) that weren't the car's fault - just overall neglect, but nothing major was wrong.
About the worst thing I had was the near side drive shaft started knocking horrendously. Trouble is, it sounded exactly like the off side driveshaft had gone, and so that was duly replaced, but the knock remained. Raising the front of the car and putting it in gear with the engine running didn't locate the knock - with the suspension fully drooped, it just made loads more worrying knocks!. Anyway, nearside driveshaft replaced, and all is quiet. I'm guessing the way the engine is mounted just transfers all the noise to the driver's footwell, so you can't tell where the noise is coming from! This is a common problem by the way - there are several websites with people asking why every time they replace the driver's driveshaft, the noise is still there
There are lots of scare stories on the net saying that if the car knocks, the diff is about to die. This is in most cases rubbish! It is more likely to be a CV joint (although telling which one it is is practically impossible, as explained above!)
Other than that, this car has started every morning (without fail!), and taken me up and down the country several times. Fuel economy is good, and spares are plentiful, and normally cheap (especially on ebay!) It is also very easy to upgrade to all the equipment from the higher spec models with bits bought off ebay - it all just screws in, and in a few cases, the wiring is already there!
I owned a Peugeot 309 GRD Turbo Limited Edition, on a J reg and would still have it now if I hadn't been hit by a lorry. I was standing still and the lorry hit me from behind doing 25 mph pushing me into the car in front. My lovely white 309 was now the size of a Mini and I got out with out a scratch, says a lot about the build quality. Lots of room inside, and fully loaded with 4 people and a roof rack she still cruised at a 100mph on a trip to the south of france.

My first car was a 1991 J reg 309 1.9 Diesel which I purchased in 2000 with 123,000 on the clock. Although 309s are generally slagged off and under rated, I can assure you that I would still have mine now if I hadn't have crashed it recently. Although it was repairable,my parents treated me to a newer and more powerful car, a 306 turbo Diesel which I'll discuss later. I found the 309 a great car to own with reasonable insurance and parts costs, together with superb fuel economy of up to 60mpg. I had no major problems with the car and what few bits were needed other than routine servicing were a new tyre, alternator belt, rear exhaust box and two new driveshaft gaiters. The only breakdown I suffered was a dead battery one freezing winters morning, bought a new one, whacked it in and it never stopped since. It was good to drive apart from no power steering( a sod to park), the gears, clutch and brakes were fine. Although not for boy racers, performance was reasonable for a non-turbo diesel and managed to put an escort turbo diesel to shame! It would cruise nicely at 75 on the motorway, would hit a ton flat out but would be noisy! The only thing I didn't like about the car was its dated looks, but looks aren't everything!

Overall, a good model and somewhat underated (I own a 309 carb GL) and during my 8 years of ownership some electrical trouble, eg, alternator, interior light, clock, front screen washer pump. Also, some mechanical trouble, radiator, head gasket, fuel pump, hanbrake cable, glove box flap. These cars can be picked up cheaply, but are now begining to show their age due to wear and tear. Other plus points are good ride and handling, eg, compare with 1989 Escort, good interior space, good luggage space, good spares availability, though some genuine Peugeot parts are pricey (especially electrical gear). A word of warning, the automatic chokes on the 1.6 carb models are the worst Peugeot has ever fitted to any model, (trade info) get it changed to a manual choke and enjoy more MPG and better starting. No suspension or transmission problems (except an occasional reluctance to engage reverse, though no gearbox mechanical problems, and slick 50, and synthetic gear box oil helps a lot). A nice slight rarity factor in ownership. Also, no rattles or interior quality problems encountered, and paint work quite good, though word of warning, Peugeot used a consignment of cheap Russian steel in their body work in the late 80's early 90's (pre 306 days)and on some 309's this shows (trade info). So, choose carefully, check previous servicing history, and one of these underatted good value for money motors may give you years of good service.
