I have owned a 318 SLD Turbo diesel estate for 3 years, and this has been probably the best car I have ever bought.
Reliability is outstanding, apart from service items I have bought only a throttle inner cable, and a door window
opening mechanism.
Peugeot diesel engine is a rugged and reliable performer, 45-50 to the gallon unless you drive it really hard. I still get at least 30mpg towing a caravan.
It does not use any oil in between services.
Build quality is excellent, the interior is well finished and the ride is smooth and quiet.
Points to watch for - electric front windows can get stuck in the glass surround and may become detached from the fixing runner underneath, this can bend the mechanism arms.
Prevent this by spraying WD40 or similar into the runners at either side of the glass occasionally, and never try to open when frozen!
After a high mileage the 2nd turbo breather hose from the left can collapse under acceleration cutting down the air intake, check by watching it whilst you rev the engine.
Replace if neccasary , or put some sort of tube into the hose to stop it happening.
Bad points - you need twelve inch fingers to get behind the
rear carpet trim to change the rear light bulbs.
Estate section is really quite small, I have heard the car described as being a "Lifestyle Estate" -which I think means not quite a working estate - which I would agree with.
More suited to carrying your golfclubs or picnic basket than lengths of timber and workmates ! Most annoying thing -
the rear seat splits 2/3rd-1/3rd, but the seat base doesn't
what in hell is the point of that ?
In summary, this car is a well kept secret, and low prices mean that it is terrific value.
I never set out to buy one of these cars - it was low mileage, well looked after and cheap so I bought it, and thank goodness I did. The car will be ten years old next year, and I have thought about replacing her, but what is the point when the car does
everything I needand is still a good looker without a single spot of rust ?
