Had this from new as a company car and bought it outright to escape punitive tax bill. Performance is excellent apart from the Ford USA gearbox which changes down too low a ratio on kickdown. The ZF box on the series 2 S-Type is much better. MY gearbox failed at 55,000 miles but was replaced free of charge by the Jaguar dealer. The Jag warranty is excellent & the dealers make you feel quite special. This summer I toured France in the middle of the heatwave with the air con on full and averaged 28mph on a combination of motorway and "B" roads which is pretty good for a 4-litre engine. Comfort and ride quality are fine but the lack of a standard CD player is a bind. Essential accessories are the CD player and the reverse park sensors, dont waste money on anything else and dont buy one without them. My only complaint has been the lack of noise from the engine as I had hoped for a meaty burble from the V8. In fact the S-type is quieter than the old model XJ8 in this respect. Would I buy another? Yes. I'm having a 4.2 V8 next summer.
