I had this car from new for 2 years from September 2001 to eptember 3003, when I had to put it off the road due to brake failure-the pedal can be pressed into the carpet. It had independent garage report, MOT failure, RAC report and Police report threatening prosecution if I use it with the defective brakes. The contract hire company Lombard claimitis Ok and will neither repair or replace it, Nissan refuse to discuss or contact me on it, as it is contract hired, Arnild Clark took 1 year to repair the engine management faults, and had it in more than 6 times for brakes-but could do nothing-the pedal still touches the floor. Had 2 Nissan Patrols, both 4.2 diesels, had the last one ten years 130.000, and not one breakdown, (yet)Apart from normal wear and tear, tyres battery, winscreen wipers, oil and filters, only one suspension bush wore out. I repaced the whole lot with polybushes, from http://www.polybush.co.uk (no connection to me)Great motor, has done all I have asked of it, shame they stopped the 4.2 engine, but rumour has it a new 4.5 diesel will be made next year (cant wait) !!!
This has got to be the very best tow vehicle on the market. Cheap to run, service and maintain and totally reliable in the 3years we owned it.
Patrols are exceptionally strong vehicles. Good old fashioned chassis construction underneath and simple mechanics. Off road performance and ground clearance is superb and useful features such as an electronic suspension release which allows extended articulation and an electrical diff locker all help when the going gets tough.
Sadly through no fault of our own, we were involved in a high speed accident head on with a commercial pick up which had been shunted from behind into our path. The strength of this vehicle was responsible for keeping the family and myself out of hospital. Trust me when I say they are SOLIDLY engineered.
We've now purchased the latest NISSAN PATROL 3.0 Direct Injection Turbo - (manual) although initially thinking the 4 cylinder engine may not be upto the previous 6 cylinders of the 2.8, I was quickly proved wrong. The latest version is even better. Much more torque and around 30mpg as opposed to 25mpg previous.

Purchased my Patrol from new (6 cylinder 2.8 model), no warranty claims, have had no problems at all. Great off roader, and extremely good at towing my caravan (1750kg fully laden), will buy another!
