I had one of these for 6 years. I paid £1750 for it with 52000 on the clock and a FSH, MOT and Tax. It was superb to drive and a lot of fun pulling away from the lights and driving generally. It was reasonably quick, I think it's down for 150 BHP, Not up there with your Impreza's and Lancer Evo's but quick never-the-less (This should not be confused with the 216 Gti). A good conditoned and well maintained one would be worth having for a reasonable price with full electrics. You can pick up parts cheaply from most breakers yards. I liked the "it's only a Rover" look from certain other drivers. Often they ended up looking at the rear disappearing away from them. I think there are 220 Gti & GSi Turbo Hatchback versions and they are much quicker by all accounts. For the money the power and drive is very good. You can pick them up for peanuts now.

Bloody good fun to drive, plenty of space inside, cheap and easily available parts

really fast comfortable motor, only gripe is electric motor for windows is different than other 200 models and very pricey at about £380 ,consequently i am driving around with drivers window taped up.
130 k and still drives brilliantly, replaced low profile tyres with standard tyres resulting in much improved grip if slightly noisier.
Will be sad to see it go as i will be selling it shortly.

I brought a rover 220 gti 90,000 miles on a K reg , and now have 105,000. It was serviced regularly by Rover. There have been no problems so far only it needs a complete new exhaust as it is rusted all over. I brought it after owning a mazda and noticed the following :
When taking bends it has poor stability-is similar to a pramful of bricks. It tilts and slips and is dodgy to corner even slight bends at speeds above 70mph. Suspension needs lowering and hardening.
The engine is noisy (it makes grinding whirring sounds - like a tractor pulling an iron roller ) especially just after starting up. It struggles to start/stalls when air temp is low and also when the engine is hot.
The clutch judders ( a common fault on this model). The hoses are leaky also it is quite thirsty on oil and water. Fuel consumption is OK at 25-30mpg.
Minor niggles are - mirrors are small & it hasnt got the best all round vision, fog light switch is in a stange position making you fumble in darkness to find the switch, bodykit is too low at front and back (watch out for kerbs when parking )
Good points - good compact gearshift, v.fast in straight line, p.steering is light and s.wheel can be turned with two fingers-great on long journeys, parts cheaper, all electrics still working, wiper reservoir is good sized, lots of legroom, bootspace and esr ew. Even though the engine fills bonnet it is easy to work on due to good design. Cheap insurance, paintwork is superb and there is less exterior plastic than other models to fade to grey. Also it looks stunning. Very cheap to buy. I wouldn't change it for the world !
