We have had an M reg Rover 623 gsi for the past 4 years and love it. Only problem we have had is the distributor has gone. Does anyone know where we can buy one as it seems to be a rare part having been to 15 car breakers! Thanks

I have owned 3 600's over the past 10 years. I currently have a V reg 623gsi. About a year ago I had the car converted to dual fuel (LPG). I had a high quality system fitted costing around £1,500. There is no loss of power, but a drastic reduction in running costs. I pay around 50% of the fuel costs compared with a petrol only version.

The shape of this car is timeless, though I have made some minor modifications to just tweak its look. I have added a stainless steel mesh grill to the huge air intake under the front bumper. This is to protect the radiator from stone impacts and to improve the look. I have also colour coded the radiator grille and added the same stainless steel mesh to give the car a more sporty, aggressive look.

The next project will be the addition of some 17" wheels and a rear wing spoiler. I am considering the arched wing from the Rover 45/MG as I think it looks better than the flat version designed for the car.

All in all I love this car. When I think about replacing I have a problem thinking of a modern car which would be as satisfying.

I have owned a 623 gsi for a year now and belive it or not I swopped a Porshe 928s for it the Porsche was passed it! it still turnes up on ebay now and again..
the 623 is the latest in a long line of top Rovers I have owned from the 3500 single plenum SD1 the 827 Vitesse through the 220 gti I owned a 1994 620ti for about three weeks before the turbo went pop, I drive my cars hard. I have without any doubt found that the 623 is the most underestimated car Rover (bmw) ( under which ever form they like to take ) has ever made. It is totally reliable first time every time maintain it well, plenty of oil changes, add a green filter, lower the suspension put on 17" wolf race wheels, mitchy pilot tyres, poly bushes and the thing really does give one heck of a good drive, and it does it in full comfort. Half leather seats rule, class and warmth in the winter. If it's nightfire red and got tinted (black)rear lights and head lights(during the day) and a three inch pipe at the back, then it's proberbly me, so take care, I love my motor and you cant put it down,,,, no I'm not a school boy racer I left school a while back but me and my motor are now teaching the street a lesson.......Rover Rule OK long live MG
see ya

I had a 95 rover 623 and am having problem with the suspension & air con now. Anyone know is it possible for me to use a honda accord or prelude suspension as a subsitute as someone told me they are the same.
Anyone know the freon type of 95 623? is it CFC R-12 OR non-ozone-depleting alternatives (such as HFC, hydrofluorocarbons), URGENT, PLEASE HELP!

I Bought my car, a 96/N, for £1250 at auction (includes buyers premium) feb 2003, it has FSH last one a month ago, full leather, all electrics, A/C, ABS and 84k on the clock.
There was loads of 600s going through priced from £800 to £2000.

Its a real bargain if you dont mind just a boot, its a shame they never made an estate.

Quick motor takes off at 3500 rpm. Nice seats, headroom just about ok with sunroof but most other cars are worse.
MPG is good. Steering not too light. Sqirms a bit on bumpy roads, some torque steer on full throtle, leather seats to slippery for kids booster seat. Sunroof noise at speed when closed.
Could cost me my licence.

I still have a 623 GSI from new in 94 (L) and i must say it has lasted very well over the years and dealt with pretty much everything i have thrown at it. Coming from a Nissan 200SX it was a bit of a drop down in performance but made up for that in space and comfort over many of the middle range saloon cars that were available at the time (Volvo, BMW, Merc etc) Overall the car has a very good feel to it. I opted for the automatic version because i felt it was best suited to london city driving.

As many of the other reviewers of the 600 series have said it has its bad points and with the 623 gsi (auto) the gearbox is one of those disadvantages. Gear changes are felt everytime it changes (even after having it looked at by specialist) but you get used to this even though you should not have to. The steering is rather light at speeds which at first makes it a bit daunting to actually drive at higher speeds but once you are used to the feel of the steering you realise it holds the road really well if you have a decent set of tyres on it.

I still love the look of the 600 and think the design of its interior is pretty good aswell, the location of all insturments and controls are placed within easy reach with the exception of the ashtray. Being a right handed smoker i tend to have to have the window open rather than use the ashtray which is in a most awkward position (in front of the gear lever at the bottom of the console behind a flip up cover) perhaps the japaense dont care about that kind of thing.

For those interested in body styling the rover 600 series look allows for quite a few radical or subtle changes whichever best suit your needs and there are quite a range of kits available. As for tuning there is very little you can do to a 623 to beef its power up this is primarily due to the parts that were used in the engine (Honda based) If you want raw performance but keep the 600 series then the 620 Ti is advised with a 2.0 Turbo it will out perform most cars of its class.

Personally i am going to stick with the 623 GSI for a while longer.

Mine is 95 auto with 59600km on the clock (I live in Hong Kong). Seems that I don't have any problem with the roof. However, my car can only go 8.66km per liter of fuel. Do you think that's normal?
