my first twin -cam :1499cc feels like a 2litre. mines on 35k miles and immaculate, but has a new clutch and alternator,.the usual silver, paint job- NEVER been put through a car wash, so it still shines nicely.Immobiliser can be a problem- it will flatten a good battery in about a week, and the you fiddle with the remote fob till you hit the right one. ar is now surplus, tax and mot for a year (amost).Absolutely no rust or dents. A very pretty car for sale now at £400.I have had her for 4 trouble free years, as my runabout in Enfield.

never fails to start
needs a good battery

My Rover 214 was my dad's who died this year. I can't say I love it as my last car was a Ford Puma which I adored. She got nicked from the company car park and trashed alas. However, the rover's a P reg and only done 33,750 miles and she's easy to drive, quick off the mark and roomy. She's a five door and the two back doors creak no matter how much WD40 I use but then they match my knees! Good runaround for town with the capabilities for long range journeys. Road handling is good and c]she's a comfortable ride.
I found myself locked out and the car dead a couple of times but the AA guy said not to fiddle with the keys as if you manage to press both open/lock buttons at the same time it craps the on-board computer because it tries to do both at once. Took the leads off the battery for thirty minutes and hey presto car works fine. Now I carry an adjustable wrench in the glove box just in case!
She'll never be a sports car but an overall good family or first car.

Nippy, roomy and versatile
fuel comsumption is not as good as it could be, it isn't a ford puma!

I have a 5 dr. 214 SLi and it's my first car. For a first car, i think it takes some beating! Mine's on a G plate with only 42000 GENUINE miles on the clock. VGC, FSH, A good friend only wanted £700 for it. I've serviced most of the consumables on the motor (oil, filters, coolant, plugs and leads, ect.) and it runs very well indeed. (even kept a modded golf 1.6 at bay off the lights lol) It seems a common fault for the rubber "L" connector to the red fuel trap vacuum hose on the inlet manifold to perish and crack. I dont know what difference this makes to general running but i repaired the connector. Guess its there for a reason hence the repair. Just wondering if it does make any difference.

As my First ever car i was soooo please to own a rover, the 214 Si is a wonderfull car, purchased it about a month ago from a chap in bournmouth. Opelsecent purple.. looks great when just waxed etc.. really nice interior. would recomend any rover from 1996 onwards.
Only had afew problems, 1 bieng the key fobs dont work all the time, getting 1 reprogrammed next week, gonna cost me about £100 quids just for one... and the other nigley problem is a sticky clutch, only seems to do it when the engine gets warm.. when its been left to cool down and you first drive it its fine, but after 10 mins or so, it starts to stick.. which as you can imagine gets very anoying in busy traffic, still not sure what to do about that. any ideas ? oh and a strange knocking noise sometimes when i pull away... could be exhaust but doesnt appear loose. grrr

other than that its perfect for me, looking into some sort of modding for it, but money is tight as always.. so may be only a dream.

Buy a rover, they have class, they are lookers, and they have power then you need it.

XX- WARNING When removing cylinder head do not turn the engine over as the bolts that hold the head on also hold the bottom half of the crank shell bearings together which will fall into the sump which i found out when putting my one together. i have fitted an x performance air filter which makes the exceleration much faster and with the 16v makes it sound amazing

all you need to do to disable tohe alarm is to remove the fuse from the fusebox located underneath the drivers side dash. BTW i had problems with a rover fitted alarm and did the same - but i then found out that the real problem was with the primary circuit that the alarm and alarm fuse are connected to - straight wiring this to the fusebox seemed to fi the problem - also check your ignition lamp's activity as the HT cable and cable running to the fusable link is on the same circuit (connected to the alternator + battery) and the cable which provides power from the alternator to this lamp is the small one of the three wired straight into the dislay panel behind the dash

well what can i say?? ive had mine for 18 months and wot a car the 214si is!!! apart from head gaskets, whih the 214 surffers from alot less than the 216 and 220 and gearboxes are questionable (dont know about the 218 diesel). now i live in bournemouth which is capital for modded motors. not only can you put it into 8-10 corners but you'e still got power afterwards. now mines had some mods dne to it, gti gearbox, rad, clutch, induction kit, exhaust, valve springs, cams, PBV etc.. and it out runs. cavalier sri's, escort RS2000's, 318, civics, and pushed acouple of focus's. That 1.4 engine gets more respect pulling a motor that weights 1000kg at a rate like mine, than a silly little maxed pug, saxo, 205, clio, and (found on roadside DEAD)......F O R D's so people who say that rovers are old mans cars. really need to get out more and change what they drive.

Great to drive, comfortable and very well built - better than a BMW 3 series. Cheap to run as well. My head gasket went started leaking (they don't 'go' as such), but now I just chuck in some rad weld and the water stops leaking. Great car though.

Has anyone stuck a sports exhaust on a rover 214 sli? Just wondering what you went for / suggest...
Was looking to put a peco stainless, but ideally wanted a twin exhaust setup.
Any thoughts, anyone?

Good car for the price of £550, though I still think this maybe too high! but if you consider price relations to a fiat, fiesta or any other small car of a younger age its good. For road safety, size & speed/stability on the road then it's a diamond. Definately a family friendly car with it's boot space. My only qualm is the heater. It does not get very hot, I have yet to flush the heater matrix through to remove any blockages. But in the sense of heater performance I find it a complete waste of time having heater vents on the driver & paasenger door, as this I believe is draining the heat temperature concentration onto the windscreen thus giving poor visibility in winter months. All in all a great car to have. enjoyable, comfortable drive.

What a fantastic peice of engineering!! My Rover has all the charm on James Bond and has attracted just as many ladies! (Admittedly a few were relatives!) It's a sexy looking beast with sparkling red paintwork, trendy go faster stripes and three odd wheel trims! Not only does it look as good as this months club international centrefold the ol' beast has more than enough power to out run the odd chutney ferret in their Seat Ibizas or new Fiestas! I even had a race with my mates Toyota Supra and kept up with him until 160 when I nailed a passing phesant and ended up in a ditch! Anyone who thinks this an old mans car is simply uneducated!!
