Hi Im Jayson (2cap),
I have never owned a motorbike before so if I manage to buy one off preloved .co.uk it will be my first. My father has owned many different bikes before and now owns what I think is an Armstrong, an old Army bike. One of the many bikes he's owned before was a Triumph, what type of Triumph it was I'm not sure so I've just guessed. My father buys bikes and rebuilds them to look how he wants them to look and I'm hoping he'll help me do the same to my bike if I manage to get hold of one.

iv owned my trident for a month after not having a bike for over 10 years... reliving my youth so my girl friend says.. anyway.. its got full triumph history to 12k & i bought it with 16k & got it serviced straight away.. i,m going to europe for 2 weeks at the end of july & planning on doing 2 to 3 thousand miles. but there is a slight noise from bottom end when accelerating between 2 and a half to 3 thou revs like a trrrr & then clears? garage where iv had it serviced says its ok but i dont want to get stuck in the dordoigne... iv heard about the sprag? clutch going? any feedback much appreciated.. time to stop moaning cos the trident is a great bike, pulls in every gear & its a big solid lump n i love it..needless to say so does the other half..

I bought it new in 92 and by the time I would have changed for another Triumph had stopped making them. The speed triple is too much of a tarts parlour/fashion item for me so I kept it.
It's had two sprag clutches as triumph improved the design and you should check with the present owner to see if this has been done as the earlier ones are only good for about 10 and 20 thousand miles respectively, The second upgrade is bigger and requires the casings to be slightly ground back on the early bikes with the gearbox access plate on top so it'll cost a lot to get done . The early bikes (like mine) have an 18" six spoke rear wheel which restricts your choice of tyres conpared to the 17" shod later machines (three spoke wheel ) but they run and run and have a brutal purposeful look which hasn't dated as much as the faired bikes and like all the first generation hinkley triumphs is big enough for a sixfooter to climb all over like only a midget can on a ducati

Good riding position, pulls brilliantly from 3500 up, the full gearbox unlike the early speed triple
tall and heavy making it harder for the slighter built gentleman to throw around, some of the bracketry on the early machines was like an afterthought

I love the early Hinckley triples. A huge amount of motorcycle for the money and beautiful to look at too. The Trident has a great riding position, the engine is a gem and they handle great. Build quality and dealer back up are second to none. Definately recommended! I am on my second Trident now and have owned / ridden Hinckley Triumph's exclusively for the last 5 or more years.

The Trident is a real sleeper with arm-wrenching mid-range grunt, good ergonomics and decent handling. It is a tall, top-heavy machine, but once you get used to it you’ll surprise many sportbike riders. Suzuki and Kawasaki four- and six-piston calipers bolt right up and Race Tech springs change the handling so much that it feels like an entirely different machine. This is one of the best all-around bikes I’ve ever experienced: A real keeper!

I owned a Trident for 5 years and really enjoyed it.I scored 4 for performance, its not the fastest bike (125-130) but it goes well enough, and the midrange and pull from the triple is just brill. If youv'e the balls, you can really throw it around as the weight gives it a lot of stability.Front forks and brakes are soft, fit braided hoses and change fork oil for thicker.Starter clutches can go on early bikes(metalic clonk when starting, quite easy to replace though)Keep battery charged,Triumphs dont like weak batteries.Great bike.

Had my Trident 900 now for 2 years and it's been fun to ride. However, I've had problems with the carbs getting blocked with debris, (presumably from dirty fuel)which causes all sorts of problems with rough running, hence the three stars for reliability. Thankfully, it's only a 2 hour job to get to the carbs, clean them out and put everything back together again. A thorough tank wash is recommended, and in-line fuel filters to stop the problem reoccurring. Acceleration is lusty for such a heavy bike. The 883cc 3 cylinder engine (when fed properly by the triple Mikuni carbs)is sweet and grunty; pulls well even in sixth gear, or from low revs. It's a tall bike, and centre of gravity is higher than most bikes of today so you have to have balls to chuck it into corners. It would go even better if the front end were stiffer! Stronger springs and a thicker fork oil would help. Finish is outstanding. Mine is 11 years old and people mistake it for new with a personal plate! I'd probably get back what I paid for it so top marks for quality of materials. If anything, the early Trumpets were over-engineered, presumably to score points off the opposition. Great bike.
