Excellent 'all rounder' and very comfortable, even 'two-up', my stock XJ650 was used for everything from green lane and forest trails, backroads touring - to French Autoroutes - and a totally mental dash round the TT course on 'Mad Sunday'in '87. Most marathon trip was with passenger and full luggage (huge tank bag, tank panniers, rear panniers and stuffer bag) from Southern France to home in North of England -Villefrance to Le Havre and Portsnouth to Durham, just over 700 miles all non stop except for petrol and the ferry crossing, cruising at a sustained 80mph all the way. Not the most pleasant trip I'll admit, but an impressive endurance feat for all concerned, including the little bike. Sold it five years ago after 9 years ownership - I do miss it. (Only failures were a huge bearing in the transfer gearbox and a corroded terminal on the rectifer.)
Very reliable. Not bad with two up. The funky big head light is like rocking horse dropping to get hold of and as it is a sealed unit you might want to check the reflective inside the light. All of them have a flat spot/ area around 6,000 - 7,000 revs. Clutch can also be a bit weird at high speed. How good is the engine? -4 degrees c and 85mph for 5 hours without missing a beat. I like this bike warts and all.
