So far the Daihatsu Cuore has proven to be a great little car. The 1.0 litre, 12 valve, three cylinder engine provides plenty of inter-city punch and returns a whopping 65 Mpg if driven with a facet of maturity (which is difficult, as it’s so small and nimble, it’s easy to indulge in some older style Mini-esque antics). The engine makes a fun, sporty, if slightly noisy sound, and the 5 speed gearbox is fast, slick, and 5th gear at 70Mph can be achieved at a little over 3000 rpm, so it will cruise at motorway speeds if required.

Handling wise the car is predictable if not dazzling, it under-steers when pushed, and due to it being quite tall, it does have an element of body-roll, but it isn't wallowy. I find the brakes are a little TOO good, and the car is easy to "lock up" if you're a little heavy with the right foot.

Inside the car is surprisingly roomy, with enough space for four adults, leg room in the front is very good, and the rear occupants get storage compartments and a drinks holder in both rear panels. cup/drink holders are fold-away in the front, and although the Cuore is a very basic car (as you should hopefully expect of this type of vehicle) it has the essentials. A lack of electric windows, mirrors and sunroof can be a boon to some, including me, as it means less to go wrong in the event of an electrical malady. Boot space is limited, unsurprisingly for such a small car, but it has room for a few large bags and the rear seat folds making it much more practical in the event you need to shift something bigger.

Parts can be traced easily, the car itself is easy to work on if you have a bit of automotive savvy, and the body isn’t too prone to rot, although rear arches etc will rust if you become careless with the care and attention.

So to conclude if you want a reliable, nippy car for the city/school/commute run, basic specification but 60+ Mpg, a 60-70 MPH cruiser if needed, enough room to take the kids out for the summer jaunts to theme parks etc, and an all-round easy car to live with, the Daihatsu Cuore will give you endless smiles for miles.

Excellent MPG, roomy, 1.0 three cylinder engine is very nippy, cruises well at 70 Mph, group 2 insurance, basic and fun to drive, easy to park, great visibility,
basic, some body roll, skinny wheels don't promote confidence in the wet, over-servoed brakes, badge snobs may snicker unjustifiably, slightly noisy
