A perfect introduction to bigger sports-type bikes, in my opinion. The ZZR600 is often criticised for being heavy and soft, but for someone with no previous experience it feels superb. The weight simply isn't an issue for me, and the suspension softness only becomes one when you get to cornering speeds which I simply don't yet have the ability or confidence to achieve. I honestly don't believe I could ride an R6 or GSX-R600 any quicker at the moment.
The ZZR's engine is a belter, and allows the bike to keep up with any modern supersports 600 on the straights. It's useable from idle, although really wakes up at 8,000 where it will happily hover the front wheel off the deck in the lower gears, and tug your arms out of their sockets. Sounds lovely too with an airbox howl over 10,000 which makes me grin like an idiot.
Handling is more capable than me. The E2 was the last model with non-adjustable front forks, and they are a bit soft, although Ohlins do a kit to sort them for about 80 quid. Rear shock is OK when preload is wound up to maximum. Two up it can't cope though and bottoms, with the centre stand decking out ridiculously early. A Hagon will sort it for £240.
Reliability of mine has been pretty good. The Datatool alarm/immobiliser kippers the battery if the bike isn't used for a week or more, but apart from that it starts instantly in all weathers, and hasn't let me down. Expense is looming though in the form of a rotten downpipe that is starting to blow, and front discs that are past their best. To be expected on a bike fast approaching its 10th birthday I suppose. General finish is good, and the bike still scrubs up superbly.
An underrated and insurable sports-ish 600 which I would recommend to anyone.
