I have had a 1978 CB200 for around 4 years and have found it to be reliable. The main problem with this model is once the big ends start to develop play, you can't just get new rods fitted.
The crank pins are an integral part of the flywheels and will be damaged by any free play. There is no point in reboring and fitting new pistons onto worn small end bearings either.
My engine is now at this stage and I am unable to find a source of supply as crankshafts are now discontinued for this model, but if anyone knows of a supplier then please let me know.
If you ever buy this model, always listen carefully to the engine and if there are any knocking noise then don't touch it !
I owned a new one in '76 and recently bought one in need of restoration early in '04. It's sorted, mot'd and running now. http://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk have a good selection of spares including engine parts. I still need some mudguards and headlamp rim as the chrome is pitted so let me know if you've any of these for sale. It's so eay to ride and feels safe. I bought it for 235 quid and have spent 150 quid doing it up. My first one was bullet proof so I hope this one's as reliable. Here's to many happy hours of riding, Royst.
I saw a copper riding one of these and wasimpressed by the sound and looks 25 years ago! I managed to aquire an ex-police one six years ago, complete with Rickman fairing and panniers .I rebuilt it with new rims/silencers/plus respray to the nearest green I could find.I.m 73 years old and have enjoyed every moment I can find. It's a great pleasure to ride! 12v lighting/5 speeds/electric start!!And it is oil tight.I cannot ask for more.(sold the fairing! I like to see the front wheel.
I bought my CB200E about 3 years ago and refurbished it and it is very reliable. The weak point on this model is the cam chain tensioner but as long as you tension it about once a week, you shouldn't have any problems. The best parts supplier in the UK is http://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk
The best bike i ever had and still got. Got me 26miles home on 1 cylinder and it still runs ok. Except it's now due to be rebuilt so it's off the road for 2 years now
Owned for more than 5 years.
