Mine was a 1988 mod and like new. Bought in Germany. If you would like a great fast cheap bike, this is it. Sounds great too, but so does all Kawas. I sold it to a friend and his been very happy with it. He still has it and is amazed of how fast this old bike is.
Bought my GPX last year, overall it is a good bike for the money I paid 800 pounds. Only thing to watch out for is the alternator belt, it has to tensioned properly, without the official tool you'll need to adjust it several times. The engine is powerful but lacks low and mid range power, you need to drop the cog to make real progress. Handling is good apart from a slightly twitchy front end. Dunlop k205's or bridgestone bt45's are good tyres.
MPG is also good (50 + mpg) if you do'nt cane it , which you will. overall i would reccomend the GPX to anybody looking for a budget bike that can be used as commuter or as a Sunday thrashing tool.
My '88 model is immaculate with only 60000ks and only mod is a Formula1 exhaust. It still goes hard- over 240kmh at trackdays and is serviced accordingly. Yes-too soft front end(up the oil grade is best to stiffen it) and antidive forks that do dive under hardbraking. Engine-replace the chain tensioner with one off a ZX10 (longer throw) and your chain shuts up. the only other known vice, is that the waterpumps die. A great bike to go two up on and it goes around 350ks on a tank. It is comfortable to ride (or pillion) and it has the grunt and go to keep up with most. A cheap (easy on tyres etc)hi-po sports tourer that goes great get one (and the make a fantastic street fighter (stripped of all their plastic)
i ownes one of these a few years ago, very fast bike even now a few things to look out for,top end rattle usually cam and followers(can be recoated not too dear),and the odd handling due to sixteem inch front wheel and sometimes dodgy antidive on forks,a very underated budget sportsbike, handling massively improves if a 900r front end is used,or cheaper a decent steering damper,if looking to buy one walk away from anything with a noisy topend,if ok to ensure adequate topend lubrication try turning the bike over with the kill switch on to feed the cams etc with oil before startup(wish i knew this before my cams and followers wore),but apart from this not uncommon problem, this bike makes a good but if moneys tight, fast enough(155mph) good seat, not a bad handler two up,and quite economical for the performance, would buy another knowing a bit about them now,but dont pay over the odds as a decent one can be had for not a lot of cash,i am surprised not to see this bike in the review section so thought i would remedy that hope this is of some use to somone.

I have the American version (ZX750R) and love it. The only difference is it does not have GPX tags on the sides. Wonderful, very fun bike.

This is my second and it's a reasonable high powered cheap motorcycle. The front mud guard needs bracing before breaking.

A bit too stable, hard to turn but good on roads, noisy cam chain very common, easy to fix by lenghtening the rod of the chain tensioner. Cost: some welding.
Too soft front and too stiff rear end with very limited adjustments, but nice engine with lot of torque and good fairing, fast. Ohlins to rear is ~350£, helps a lot.
Fun to drive around, good saddle and not too extreme driving position as in most bikes now.
Webpage currently in Finnish, english version is coming soon, about my second GPX (the one in pictures is my first one).
