Bought a 1996 'N' 2.0 SE Manual (ex company car) with 80K miles. At 89K out of the blue (no rattle etc) timing chain jumped on sprockets as I tried to start one Sunday morning. Investigation into possible valve damage (was none it eventually transpired) meant full strip & rebuild costing £2200. Here I am 4 years later after another 87.5K miles one Saturday morning, try to start the car and the same sound (lack of compression) greets me. Again, no rattle, no warning and Nissan still give no details of any need to change timing chains. Also one ball joint and a new radiator core et al just cost me £1400 just recently. Loved the car to death but was a money pit and feel Nissan a disgrace. Had 202K mile Bluebird before - lost all confidence in brand..what a waste; still not decided what to do with car but not paying £1k+ to fix again.
Great cars. Super-smooth engine and very nice autobox. Very very roomy, especially in the back. Parts not too extortinately priced - anyway, you're unlikely to need any. If you see a good one - buy it!!
Very cheap to buy 2nd hand due to massive depreciation in UK. SE 1995 comes with full spec, electrics, climate, twin bags etc for less than £4000. Very roomy, 2 litre manual slow in town but excellent on motorway. 32-36 mpg, not bad for a V6. Cheap insurance due to badge and full Nissan immobiliser. Spare parts hard to find though in UK, but not generally needed. Excellent, cheap, family car.
