I have had numerous Citroen Estates the current one being a 2003 SX with the 2.2 HDI engine (136bhp). I tow a trailer and a caravan (not togther!) and the Citroen hardly notices that there is something on the back. I have had the car a year and the only problem encountered is that the ESR (Electronic Stability) warning light comes on occasionally immediately followed by the Pollution Fault message and lights. The car reduces its power output into 'limp home mode' and with a caravn on the back this cause me to have to go down to a max of about 40mph. The answer (in the short term) is to get into a layby, switch off for a few mins and then start up again. The ESR warning has gone, power is back again and after a couple of days the Pollution Fault warning disappears - very strange. The car is in for its MOT/service today and the Citroen specialist is having a look at this sensor problem. I went on the net on various Citroen forums and found at least 50 other people who had the same thing with no particular solution. If anyone knows then tell me!

Great ride, lots of goodies (Cruise, sterring radio controls, rain sensing wipers, automatic lights etc), good tow car, fantastic hydropneumatic suspension, 40mpg overall
Depreciates badly.

bought a c5 in place of the c8 i had the c5 is a much smoother ride than the c8 the c5 does more mpg found out also from a friend that citroen sold there c5 to bentley later i found this to be true as i watched it on the garage on sky
my c5 pulls my 5 birth caravan with quite ease unlike the c8
this is my 3rd citroen and had no problem with the first one and this one all i can say is

(DONT BUY A CITROEN C8)

we had a citroen zara picasso again nlovely smooth drive didnt have any problems at all with this car
then we swapped it for the c8
swapped the c8 after 10 weeks for the c5
very very happy with this c5 very large boot pleanty of space in the back kids love this c5 my plan is to keep this car for a while only had 26000 on clock when bought from a dealer
and as far a dealers go where we bought the car from we got a hand over that lasted over 1hour the sales man told us what everything were for even down to changing the spare wheel very happy with the after svs as well

I have a 2001 2.0 HDi 110 bhp. I tow a quite heavy caravan with it, the only problem being pitching, but I put this down to the suspension. I bought it 2004 with 38000 on the clock.
I had problems with the back suspension knocking right from the start, had it back 4 times, still didn't get it sorted. The main dealer was not at all helpful, but I got hold of the mechanic, talked nicely to him and he did what he could. It's a lot better, but the noise is still there "You have to learn to live with it" should not be the mantra of a main dealer of such a prestigious car. The absence of a workshop manual doesn't help, but you might want to log on to the Citroen Yahoo group, it really helps. I paid £7300 and I consider it worth the money, an enjoyable ride, and a beautiful car. Overall the main dealers do not know enough about the car, and Citroen U.K. is as much use as a chocolate fireguard, but i've had citroens before and I love them.

Lovely car, Superb ride
No manual, abyssmal after sales service

THE C5 ESTATE WAS PURCHASED IN 2003 AND IS WELL LIKED ,FOR COMFORT, ITS SMOOTH RIDE AND THE HIGH LEVEL SETTING IS VERY USEFUL ON ROUGH ROADS AND LOAD SPACE IS VERY USEFUL ,ALSO PERFORMANCE AND ECONOMY IS VERY GOOD WITH THE DIESEL IN 110BHP FORM BUT LOW GEARS ARE NEEDED A LOT TO MAKE PROGRESS BUT MAKES A GOOD CRUISER ONCE ON THE MOTORWAY. CITROEN DEALERS HAVE DEALT WITH PROBLEMS QUICKLY THE REAR OPENING WINDOW HAS BEEN REPAIRED FOUR TIMES BUT AFTER THIS MAJOR PROBLEM WHICH ALL C5 ESTATES HAVE IT MAKES ME WONDER HOW RELIABLE THE REST OF THIS CAR WILL BE ,I THINK THIS CAR MIGHT HAVE BEEN LET DOWN BY CITROEN NOT TESTING THE BUILD QUALITY ENOUGH

C5 HDI Exclusive estate......I love it. I do about 45,000 miles pa. The car is just over 3 year old with 153,000 miles on the clock. I get an average of 38.6 mpg which is perfectly okay, the ride is superb on long journeys.......the dealer support is however, very poor for parts. Does anyone have a drivers side electric window switch? Has anyone suffered not being able to open the glass tailgate?,

Kind regards,

Big T

I had problems with my 2.0 HDI estate from delivery. The headlights did not work and had to wait 3 days for part to come into stock. I was traveling to spain and went for headlight deflectors had to wait 3 days as not in stock. Driving over the Pyreneesat night the headlights went out on return to UK dealers could not find a problen with lights. I contacted Citroen Customer Care and was told to contact the dealer. When car was stationary in traffic or at lights the suspension would raise and then lower.

This is the most Un-reliable car I have ever owned Citroen do not want to know problems, and just refer you back to the dealer all the time. In the end I refused to pay the finance asking them to collect there car as I would not drive a car with faulty headlights and suspension. (this took 9 Months)

this is the second C5 I have owned, the first was replaced due to my many complaints about the suspension, the pressures were adjusted, then rear spheres changed then the whole back axle changed to no effect. this one is even worse and apart from the poor ride there is wind noise from both windows (acceptable says my local garage) noisy engine, although they have now changed the cam shaft. uneven running at 1800 revs. the fourth garage i've taken it too admits the suspension is faulty and has orderred parts. i forgot to mention the depreciation, list price £17400 part ex after a year £5500 ie £1000 a month

Bought HPi 2.0 in May 2205. First thing to go wrong was sensor for temperature. Waiting still for part. Then the fault analysis is constantly giving details of faults.(1)Anti pollution fault. (2) Gearbox Fualt. (3) Oil low, even though is not. This car is driving me crazy! No pun intended. I'm getting rid.

This LX modelHDI is of poor value, make sure you try well before you buy.
Poor injection system compares to the last 3 citroens over 22 years.Gaps in your injection/heavy on the pedal makes hard work.Creats dangerous situations.

I bought my C5 2.2HDI Exclusive SE 2nd hand in Apr03 from a dealer. The car had one previous owner from new (Nov 01) yet had only 6300 miles on the clock. I paid £13,500 inc 12mths tax and roof bars which I believe to be exceptional value for a £21,000+ nearly new car (Dont buy new!!!!). The Exc SE is fully loaded with the toys now only available as extras. I have driven it a further 13,000 miles and recently paid £113 for a 12,500 mile (2nd routine) service. It has averaged 46mpg and routinely delivers 48-50mpg on motorway journeys with the cruise set at 70mph. Problems: I have had the auto-dip rear view mirror replaced under warranty (3 years) but it took 5 weeks to get the part. Also both roof bars snapped when I loaded a windsurf boards - I await Citroen's overdue response to my claim. There is one significant negative aspect which is one of those problems Citroen knows about but pretend its not a problem because they cannot correct it - the knocking suspension! Despite its high tech profile, the suspension (notably rear) does not ride uneven surfaces well at low speeds. the rear suspension tends to knock when driving over normal high street road surface - a car that sells on its luxurious suspension should not do this. The problem is so common that one local dealer has a "C5 suspension test route". His verdict on mine was "its one of the better ones". They even confirmed that my car had been recalled to replace the "rear axle weight" (or was it to add them?) in an attempt to reduce the knocking. However, I will be having it investigated under warranty. But I am concerned it is one of those design problems that Citroen advise the dealer,...."if customer not happy, do X",..."if customer still not happy, do Y"..."if customer still not happy, tell them nothing is wrong". Does anyone have any knowledge or experience of C5's knocking rear suspension?

It is difficult to compare the top end Citroens with the full hydraulic treatment with other car because they are in a class of their own.
The heavy depreciations is caused by the public being biased towards what they know. This is my fourth Citroen with hydraulic suspension and I will not compromise the comfort of passengers and myself by buying any other car. They are extremely reliable when driven over distance between 145000 and 175000 miles.
