We had a 99 diesel with a/c and full sun roof, from new up to about 120,000 miles, a cracking car, fuel consumption not great but probably fine with the HDI engine, great load carrier, we certainly threw everything at it! Couple of front springs broke, I think this is a 'known fault' as we got a recall notice after we sold the car. Reliability was OK but I don't think there was a huge amount of life left in our car when we sold it - I would have another though.
As with many people I bought my Multispace for a particular reason and then discovered it is FUN and has real character. I've had several Vauxhall Astra Estate, since my work involves a lot of travelling, 25,000 a year and I need to carry a lot of equipment, but I also need for my own use, and for security reasons I dont want a van. I did a great deal of research especially on "Cost of Ownership" and the Multispace 2.0 HDi clearly came out best. I specified Artic Silver paint firstly because that gives a better resale, and also because Silver Metallic is the toughest paint finish (not just on Citroens). After having a Maroon finish - a disaster since every stonechip went straight through to the primer I asked around, especially among paint sprayers and that was the recommendation. I also specified air-conditioning, and the Modutop option. I'm getting a reliable 46 mpg, around town and on motorways. The performance is more than adequate and I can cover 600 miles in a day and still feel relaxed. Apart from a glovebox which could be a better fit, and an occasional, and so far undiagnosed knock from the front, it is by far the best car I have ever owned (out of about 20 cars ). If you buy this, or a Picasso, or a Vauxhall Zafira, you MUST get the security device for the spare wheel fitted , otherwise it will go missing. The downside to this is that the wheel is then mounted the other way up, so to attach an airline you need to take the spare wheel out of the carrier.
Very popular with our children, who appreciate the good view and comfortable seating - they much prefer it to our Volvo Estate. They seem much less prone to motion sickness in the Berlingo. We have the 2.0 diesel, which pulls well, but feels too high geared. It is OK for fuel economy, but not outstanding. Excellent seating position. Good for tall drivers. Slick gearchange. Heavy clutch. Outstanding load carrying for its size. Handling is good and stable in crosswinds, despite the high sides. Ride is firm, yet comfortable. Ventilation / Air Con works well. Sliding doors excellent in car parks. Tail gate a bit heavy - it's enormous! Sound system not particularly distinguished. Several minor niggles that have resulted in return trips to the supplier - fixed under the three year warranty. The rattley multispace roof is a bit of a con - the extra ventillation is just a fan that swirls the cabin air around a bit. Very low insurance group and a lot of car for the money. Pleased with it.
I have a 2002 face-lift HDI multi-space, it's a great vehicle that does just about everything well and has a rare thing for a modern vehicle, CHARACTER! . Their a relatively cheap vehicle so don't expect VW fit and finish, the HDI engine is quite lively from low revs but runs out of steam if you push it hard. The 1.9 diesel is rather under powered, the 1.4 petrol is surprising lively, I haven't driven a 1.8 or 1.6 petrol. I've had a few faults but these have been dealt with very efficiently by my local dealer. I strongly recommend air con, it's got a large front windscreen which tends to heat the cabin up during the summer months. Be prepared for lot's of enquiry’s from other motorists if you buy one, not a week goes by without someone asking my opinion.
I have a 2001 Multispac 1.6 Forte, with comfort pack and single play CD. The car has the Modultop, which has good features, inc Additional cold air fan and CD storeage, BUT it leaks like hell! Water can get in through the seal, and as you drive the water will move around and then come dripping out on your knee,s.. My car is still in the 3 yr warranty, and the local dealer is trying hard to sort it. But 3 times in the workshop and still not fixed!. Will percevere with it. If you are buying one, forget that roof option. Have air-con instead. Otherwise i find it is a good reliable motor . Does 36 mpg.
Its our second berlingo, it is a 2L Hdi it has comfort pack and alloys it is very fast and it uses hardly any fuel.
Our first one was the same but it was faulty and we needed trading standards and our local MP to sort it out. One more thing, I would personaly reccomend this car to anybody but I would not reccomend you to buy It at Arnold Clark as they have a poor after sales service
Love the space and the ride. Engine performance good (1.6L).Considering the extra ability over any "normal" £8000 car you can feel smug and clever. Would love to see a family go camping in Brittany in such cumfort in a Polo (as we did). Sliding doors a bit fiddly to shut from the inside.
Handling, performance and comfort amazingly good, considering it's van origins. Also a good towing vehicle and excellent load lugger. Mine is a '99 model with the full lenth sunroof, great when the sun shines. Would recommend one to anybody needing a multi purpose estate. Superb value for money

Excellent value , especially if you have a young family. Kids love it and it handles just as well as any other Citroen. A family outing fits everything you would want to carry along..and superbly economical, my 1.4i gets between 600-650kms per 45 litres in a 50% Urban 50% Highway cycle
