Highs: Excellent screen. Love the mouse pointer "nipple". Nice and light. Excellent DVD play back. Reliable hardware on board. Top-notch Toshiba support.
Lows: Case cracked after one year on the screen near the hinge through wear and tear. Windows ME is appalling. No DOS drivers for hardware meaning old DOS games can't be played with sound. Why was no serial COM port included?.
Fantastic for general, everyday software (like Microsoft Word) and for accessing internet. Great for games on the move. Had my first Toshiba laptop for 3 years and never had a problem. Had the 1700-300 for about 18 months and no snaggs, unlike a couple of other top brand laptops which I swiftly 'passed on'.

I had three of these before I got one that worked in its entirety. The Hard Disk on the one I ended up with got bad sectors after 13 months, the plastic covering the hinges has also cracked and the sound failed when it was 18 months old. I would of thought three years with no trouble would be evidence of acceptable build quality, so in my case I'd sare poor quality product.
