I have owned a white Mercedes Benz 200 (W123) since 1985 and have so far done around 127,000 miles. The average fuel consumption has been around 18 miles per gallon (m.p.g).
After 17 years, it has shown some sign of rust around the rear and front windscreens but they have now (April 2002) been repaired and the whole car made to look like new.
Value for money,it has been an outstanding car and there is no further depreciation cost involved. I love my Mercedes car.
Re;Mercedes 280SE, 350SE, 230 E-class. I own a successful chauffeur business and use all types of vehicles. I was always lead to believe that the Mercedes are the most popular and most reliable...... Now, I switched some of my cars to Mercedes last year, and guess what ?! yes, Im switching back. They have been very unreliable, with many problems, usually engine troubles. I have even had to have a new engine in one...That was a nightmare. Parts, availability not bad, but downright expensive. Performance, nothing special. Comfort, not that good for a large executive car. Street cred...yeah ok...prety good....But Im in business. No, sorry, Im changing back to Jaguar. OK, maybe not everybody loves them, but they were always popular enough. Superb performance, Fantastic handling and unbeatable luxury second to none...even better than our Rolls.... OK parts arn't cheap but they're cheaper and more readily available than Mercs... Fuel, maybe a bit more expensive, but well worth it. Take it from me....you know when you've been for a ride in the Jag..... anybody want to buy some Mercs?.....
The W123 series is what the Mercedes reputation was built on. They are strong, over-engineered machines. They no longer depreciate so the biggest running cost is fuel. The 6 cylinder variants have good performance but fuel consumption is 15-25 mpg. Nice cars to work on and given enough tlc will go on for a long time. Get one with a clear history and a good body. The rest is cheap to fix.

I love my old Merc 230TE, I brought it as I wanted a big estate to handle 3 kids and a months worth of shopping and because I do so few miles in a car I also wanted something different, The more I look the more I find to underline that this is a well made, possably over-engineered car designed to be used. Which it has, 170K miles slowly rising.

A superbly engineered machine. My 280E has never broken down and gives stunning performance for a car of its size, although petrol comsumption is not fantastic. It has elegant lines and turns heads wherever it goes. Parts are expensive but they last for a very long time. Long live the most successful luxury car in history.
