I've just purchased a 626 Turbo 89 model. This is a 2.2 litre intercooled turbo. It goes quite hard! I have plans as to upgrade the exhaust to a 3" mandrel bent and put a pod on replacing the current air box to make the whole car breathe better.

I then will boost it up to about 11 PSI and it should hammer! I live in Australia and these cars are quite popular. They came in three models - 626 4 door hatch (mine), 626 4 door sedan, MX-5 (626 Couple) 2 door.

If anyone knows a good site that informs people of mods and things to watch for could you email me the link to [Log in to view email]

I have owned five 2.0 litre mazdas in the '83 to '85 year range.
I think you cannot go past the handling and performance for the price.
performance wise, the car weighs only 1040kg which with the turbo engine which have also ownde makes it an absolute firecracker.
I changed my turbo for a garrett GT25, that was worth every cent, however beware of gearbox quality, its not a fast shift, not 1-2 anyway, and on rebuilt engines, you can crack oil rings if the intstructions are not followed!!

I just bought a 1987 Mazda 626 2.0 Turbo
GT. Yes, thats right TURBO. Some people
know of this model and some don't. It is
a very rare car indeed only 9% of all
mazdas made that year were turbo.
It has a 5-speed,sunroof,electronic
sport suspension,and handles like a
dream.
I have only had this car for about a
week before it started knocking which
was expected when I bought the car
leaking oil like a car uses gas. This
paticular car was not taken care of at
all which was fine since I was going to
go through the motor any way to upgrade
it to racing status. As I started the
car
for the first time after I had purchased
the vehicle it was missing bad and
smoking like it was on fire. When i
pulled out on the road to drive it home
I decieded it was know or never to see
how the car ran like it was. As I
hammered done on the throttle I was
impressed with the power, since it
roasted the tires off 1st-3rd and barked
4-5. It shortly after started knocking
because all the oil got spun out but
that is fine. The car was a steal for
only $200 I could not have went wrong.

Mazda 626 is very reliable, sails through MOT but you wish it would break.
A perfect example of modern quality systems. On paper it is perfect but on the road it is all but undrivable.
It is very uncomfortable, the roof is too low, the waist is too high, the brakes dont work, the electrics are marginal, the layout is prehistoric, it seems quiet until you try to speak but at least the radio works.
DON'T BUY ONE UNLESS IT IS OUR ONE WHEN WE TRY TO SELL IT

I Have two 1987 Mazda 626 GT Turbo's. they both have around 100,000 on them and run like they were just taken out of the box, the only problems i have had with them both was the ignition switch would die and i would be stranded. besides that, good gas eco. i race it all the time. it has electric everything, accept seats. so far i have had my mazdas going around 135mph, but i took out my wastegates, so the turbo is always open. there is also a screw on the bottom of the turbo, if you turn it up about a turn and a half, it increase's the psi. when i dyno'd my 1st Mazda,(which has a shaved head, bigger valves, bored 30 over with elderbrock racing pistons in it) it clocked out at 312hp at 4500rpm,and that was out of the front tires...all and all, they are nice cars, i call them maxima killers. the proformance is impressive if you put a little money into them.

Just bought a 1991 626 2.0 GTi DOHC. It flies, kills VW GTi's!! My ratings are based upon the fact that I only paid £400. No body rust, all the electrics work apart from aircon which I need a fuse for! Superb rally seats, you can even adjust the body wraps to hold you in! I believe the BHP is 146? How can I boost this? K&N air filter, perform plugs (which one are best), sports exhaust... any good websites?

I just bought a 1987 Mazda 626 Turbo Deluxe. Very clean and tidy car. The Turbo and the 2.0L engine were only just a year old. But i guess thats all it needs to get the living shit thrashed out of it. The turbo has been high flowed, which gives a bit more kick out of it. The previous owner was a young bloke as well. around 23. He loved it. So did i, that's why i got it. Any way, the car boots the way it is. Recently i had coolant leaks but that was easily fixed by me with no money involved. Now i've got a major oil leak, which is easily fixed. The car does 15's down the quarter the way it is. I'll be intercooling it and boost controller which controls low and high boost and a fuel cut defender, so when i run at high boost, the car can do what ever it what's. Standard when the Turbo reaches to 10 boost, it cuts off, which pisses me off cause i only doing around 4000 revs, sometimes not even. Overall good car. Just be careful if you buy one of these as parts are rare. Ever since i got this car iv'e tried to look around to see if people have a turbo version like mine and i have not seen not one yet.At the wreckers it's very hard engine wise.

Great car! Bought mine a few months ago
for $450 (1.6 litre version; 13 years
old; 260000km) and although its old it
drives like it's new. The handling is
good even at higher speeds (140+ km/h),
enough space for a few dogs and good
seats. I already drove 15000km with it
since and with the proper service I'm
sure it will reach the 300000km soon.
Repairs are cheap since almost
everything can be bought at a yunkyard.
After all the years and km's the only
small problems are corrosion (it's very
wet here in the Netherlands) and very
little oil leakage.
