Steady sea going yacht. What it lacks
in lifting up her skirts, she more than
makes up for in solid reliability
specially with the 20hp engine.
Accommodation is `OK for 3/4
crossing the channel, which i do
regularly and the cockpit is big for the
size. Modern yachts have more
room, but they're much less stable

Dockrell 27, later builder of Hurley. Good, safe older generation boat. Will not let you down even in attrocious weather. Not so fast as a plastic fantastic, but I've cruised all over the Irish Sea without concern.

Price Very reasonable, got the 11 HP Petter, reliable etc.

I have sailed a Hurley 27 for 5 years single handed off the west coast of Scotland. They are cheap for their length, extremely tough in all kinds of horrible weather and great value for money. My boat doesniot sail quickly but she never gives me any worries about taking rough stuff. The biggest problem are the tiny side decks, which are just about useless for getting about whilst at sea so it is difficult to have any protection in the cockpit, which is far too long to be of any use. Overall though a great and cheap boat for offshore sailing.

I've sailed a Hurley 27 to France and the Ch.Islands in 1998. Not bad performance under sail, needed a larger motor (8hp Yanmar) accomodation was tight glad there were only two of us!
Nasty blow on the way home 'never cause for concern' Was however surprised at the current market values - need to look at alternatives. Happy sailing

safe sea boat - old fashioned layout
narrow beam - reasonable performance.
modern boats represent far better value for money at current UK asking prices.
Need at least 12hp to make good progress.
