GPZ600R (ZX600A)
Owned for more than 5 years.
I purchased my '85 GPz600R last year (2001) and havnt looked back since. Although repairs using genuine parts is pricey, a wrecker will often do it for less. Biggest problems seem to be valve clearances and cam chain. Also the primary engine chain...(linking crankshaft and gearbox) will probably need replacing around the 100000km mark. Mine is at 120000km and is due. Other then that i love this bike. Coupled with my complete OEM worshop manual i have had many good times. The bike is very stable with pillion and the power is smooth and very linear. I run Bridgestone Battlax's front and rear and find them great. I recently done a 2700km trip without a single problem. Deffinately a great first bike. With the looks of something 8 years old and the reliability of something 20 years old. It is great.
Bought mine in 2000 and since it was 15 years old, it looked like 10 or less. The finish was great (resprayed but OK). The frame was slightly bent, but that's the only complaint I had. Check for crash damage. The lower part of the frame (sadly beneath the plastic) tells a lot of how/if the bike was crashed. It does great milage per gallon and only good two-up. It's torquey enough to ride nicley even in the lower rev range, but it won't be too happy below 2500 rpm. It cruises nicely at 4500 and the horsepower kicks in at about 6k and goes all the way in red (at 11000 or so). The riding position is great and your arms won't hurt on a longer tour alltho your butt might. The saddle is a bit too confining, but nothing a quick stretch wouldn't cure. The petrol tank holds bout 18L including reserve, so U won't have to stop at every petrol station. At least not for gas (maybe beer?) :) The front fork angle is quite steep so the bike feels a bit twitchy on its 16" wheels. It seems quite happy with Dunlop Arrowmaxes, but beware the road markings in wet. It's far better bike than the older GPZ500. More horsepower, watercooling (so greater reliability), 4 cylinder inline 16V engine, CDI, etc... Great value for money. It's a great tourer and commuter. Wouldn't have it for racing. Not enuff punch. Go for GPX or nawer ZX6 since it handles more like ZZR 600.
I had a 96 gpz 8 years ago,til it got robed,I was 18 at the time,It got used in all weathers for work and fun.Done notts to herts in 40 mins thay do do 155mph,It never let me down once.

bought a 1985 model a few years ago for my wifes first 600 machine, its been a great machine ever since.Although a slightly heavy bike ,she has had no problems .Its done 90000kms,primary chain needs replacing.Other than that it has been a great bike.A quick question, what air pressures should we run in the suspension.

I bought a 1986 600R for £650 early last year.I spent about £200 fixing it up.Since then it's been 100% reliable and while a bit off the pace of modern machinery is still great fun to ride and does not get left to far behind. At the price a real bargain.

I still have a GPZ600R'86 and goes very well, engine(very hard) and the cicle. Is very important to replace the "rodamientos" of the wheels and direction to obtain a good estability. The rear amortiguator is other part to replace each 60000-70000 Kms.(Air 1 Kg/cm2). Level 2. Fork liquid replace each 20000 Kms. Air 0,7 Kg/cm2.(SAE 10) Tyres OK : Bridgestone BT45 original dimensions goes very well. With this i can follow the new bikes in no fast roads.
