Bought a 1983 Ti, what a brilliant car, boy can I live with the rust when it drives like it does! I will never sell it, many people have made me offers, turned down every one without even considering. Who needs a golf? Alfa Romeo AlfaSud - Everything you have ever wanted in a car, and more!
What an incredible car!. 35 years ahead of its time. Buy one and you`ll be still 5 years ahead of your neighbour:).
If it had cost 100.000 brand new, snobs wouldn´t waste a minute about rust. Has anybody heard about how boring to tune a 12cyl ferrari engine is? And they used to be made of fiberglass...come on!
If rusted, get some spare panels and bring it back to live. A wheel arch can be paid with visa. The incredible feeling of being alive by having such unique driving experience, can not.
Fantastic car, ahead of it's time, the build quality destroyed it's reputation.Unfortunately it's outdated now.But if you can find a good one, worth keeping as a second car for weekend blasts!
Yes, the Sud has superb handling and chassis dynamics. Like the air-cooled VW flat 4, the water-cooled Alfa boxer powerplant is very reliable provided it is maintained. The gearbox is also tough although worn synchros may cause noise. Worn front suspension bushings and sagging springs cause inner tyre wear. I currently own a 4dr sedan and a Sprint, both 1982 and ivory in colour. Electrical faults have been the most significant malady, but with a little patience and knowledge they can be sorted out. Being a performance car means that some repairs/work is more difficult than usual such as inboard front brakes, valve/tappet adjustment+head work, handbrake cable, to name a few. I have gladly accepted these challenges in return for being able to negotiate roundabouts much faster than anything else other than maybe a Subaru WRX or modified Mini! By the way: Keep your Alfa garaged and dry.
Do you believe in angels? driving an Alfasud is half like a fairy tale and half like best Joyce´s stories...That devil car has such a hugh spirit...it´s got will to run...the more you ask, the more you have...That´s incredible feeling of becoming part of the car, a road crusader...difficult to explain.
As somebody said before, the proud of overtaking a 00 50K okm car, the intense feeling of throwing yourself into a 5 gear bend and get alive, that sound and push after 4000 rpm that makes you go further.
I´ve driven an Alfa 166, getting 230km, stopped, got into my Sud, pull away on the same road, driving 100km/h slower...and I thought to myself "poor 166, it lost the real meaning of sports driving".
Try it if you can, and you´ll find a heart-spirited small car that makes you feel that anything is possible..and it is in it!!!
Hello, my name is Veronique and I bought an alfasud Ti in 1974. In the beginning I was very pleased and I had no trouble at all. Starting from the first winter my alfasud got serious problems to get it started. Especially in the morning it was very difficult to get the motor on. So I asked the neighbors to help me with cables. They could not help me. So I called a company called 'Wacht op de weg' and they could get my motor on after I had to try a lot. Also when I went to a meeting in the evening I usually had to try a lot or the alfasud did not start. I did love my alfa, but I had a lot of problems especially everytime I had to call my work to tell them that I will be late becouse my alfasud had a problem. I remember one winter was so cold that I left my alfasud at home becouse it was two times a day I had to call 'Wacht op de weg'
MAkes any road look like a racetrack. Its a great feeling to bite at the tail of a $50k 1999 Holde HSV(V8 5.7L 215kW) through corners in my $6000 1.5L 69kw(Not enough!) alfa sprint. It goes, handles stops and sounds truly exotic. Best money I ever spent!
Rust is nothing compared to bland cars that dont corner.
When it was introduced back in 1972, the Alfasud was a brave new step for Alfa Romeo, with the introduction of front wheel drive. Great handling and a sweet engine made it a great car to drive, but unfortunately was plagued by the all too familiar Alfa rust problems.

fantastic car.I drive my father's since I was 16.I have tried a few cars since then but none of them has the feeling of the Sud,not even my brand new 156.Still have the Sudie and use it regularly and it still gives me the same smile. And all this with a tiny 1186cc...Never let me down or my father,so it is reliable as well.Forget the stories about rust and electric problems. This is a mistress and needs care ;-) A car with you have a relationship just like it is a person.I found myself talking to "her" several times :-) I just love it!

Good stuff: Wonderful fun to drive - really in touch with the road, surprisingly reliable, cute looking, great space and load carrier. A real car which will give you real fun for not much cash.
Bad stuff: Rust, tender in side-winds at high speed, getting hard to find. Beware front brakes (a bitch), cam belts and water pump, un-exciting interior - and (surprise) rust!

The Sud is not a car for the faint-hearted, or those without a desire to drive; reliability is average (I've owned less reliable cars), performance (Ti sud's, especially) was above average (remember series one examples are more than 20 years old now!) - especially the 1.5.. The light bodyshell, and rust make it a difficult car to find good examples of.
However, if you can find a low-rust example with replaced suspension and rebuilt engine (or you would like an excellent restoration project), I recommend a Series 1 Alfasud Ti, preferably with a UK 1.7 litre Alfa-33 twin-carb engine :-), light weight, sweet handling and that exhaust note!
