Well I have just picked up my 2nd hand 500S after swapping it for my Shadow 125. Have a lot of learning to do, but has been great fun so far - even in the rain!

A superb all rounder. I call mine 'skip' because i am convinced that on 2 occasions it has neatly skipped to one side to avoid a collision. Would not change it for the world.

I've had mine for 2 winters now it lives outside alot and always starts first touch of the button, only needs choke on the coldest of mornings.A bit of a wolf in sheeps clothing ,get the motor spinning and at about 8,000 thing start to happen.Mine started life at a driving school and was used for several years there, mechanically it is excellentbut bodily it is showing its Italian qualities.Only had two problems with it,first was fork seals, replaced and a pair of gaitors fitted, then the radiator burst £320.00 for a new one!!! so had it repaired at WATKINS RADIATIORS brill. job and £50 inc postage.I blame the stupid little front mud guard letting all the crap from the road up the front of the engine,i'm sure it would make the down pipes last longer too,i've used it every day to go to work and at w/ends with the wife on the back and you can really upset some of the "big boys" on the Lake district roads. The only problem now is i've changed jobs now and walk to work so it is surplus to requirements so the old girl will have to go to leave room for me to work on my Sherco and my daughters ty80 majesty trials bikes so any one interested give me a call and we can talk pennies.

ok i bought a brand spanker in 2001,for £3500,after lookin at aprilia 250 and glancing slightly 2 the left it was there..my blue lovehleh only other bike i had ridden b4 was a diversion 600 which 2 b fair sucked muchly compared. 7-9 ana 1/2 revs cb's try to tear your head off i bloody love it 2 bits. n wish i didnt want a bigger bike it doesnt scare me as much any more..

problems ive had...

chain snapped at 70mph 3000miles on clock summat or nowt, quite scary tho

110 mph it died dunno whether it ran out of petrol or what. a big puddle of oil splattered out of the exhaust and it stunk bad that was it dead 4 a week until it got fixed altho i was nearly home and low on petrol,

smart water made it look scruffy

the bike isnt primed b4 they spray due to them being made in italy with no rain so a bad scratch will rust

poor front forks abit crappy lookin and rear shockers!!!! had 3 rear shocks in 1 month warrenty items tho rusty buggers. the ones now which ive had for 18month are quality

rusty pipes... heat res spray works wonders.. altho i run it thru all weathers bit of engine corrosion on the casing again summat or nowt all bikes get it just most r covered up with plastic out of site out of mind

but.... thats boring tat the fact is its a grand bike with partial streetfigher characteristics

selling it seems 2 be a problem tho no one wants it .. sob sob they dont know what there missing the fools

end of the day if i could afford it i would get rid of all the little scratches and dings its accumalated and store it in a glass case forever its my baby

traffic...what traffic, windy roads yum yum eats the road

it is unfaired, met midnight blue with gold alloys the chix dig it, faired version looked a tad gurlie and was cherry red..eugh i purchased a fly screen for £40 which makes it look mean and well stops most wind upto my chin get my head down a little and vaavaavooom where off 0-60 in what i think is about 4 seconds without redlining

BLOODY AWESOME i think selling mine is gunna be the biggest idiotic foolish thing il ever do but... im young n speed hungry and.. pointless touch wood

definatly when im a coffin dodger and unable 2 hold my weight on my wrists and unable to prevent myself farting whilst clambering onto a huge bike il buy an old cb500 steed and gallop into the sunset whilst trying 2 hold my head straight at 70 ... bravo 2 the beastly cb500

I've had one post DAS and love it to bits. Even before doing the DAS I knew I wanted a CB500, when I actually trained and passed on one, it had to be!

As others have said, ultra reliable (if you service it properly), nippy and about as much fun as you can have on a 500cc machine, considering the insurance and running costs. It really is a do everything bikes, maybe not off road but everything else, touring, scratching, red light races, commuter, it'll do the lot. Get it in the 7.5 to 9.5k RPM powerband and it turns into a little flyer. Cheap non-Honda parts readily available, shame they stopped making them in 2003, it's sure to become a classic bike - If you can get someone to part with one!

Being a born again biker at the grand old age of 33 I wanted a bike with a bit of oomph but not so much that I couldn't afford to insure it. The CB500 I bought was actually the same bike I did my DAS training on, so it's got a few miles on the clock (47k) but still runs smoothly with plenty of poke for the class of bike. I have become accustomed to the power now and would probably move up to a 600 sport for my next bike but I will always think back to the CB500 as a great allrounder and superb value for money. It doesn't pretend to be something it's not and does what it says on the tin.

The more I ride it the more I like it. Excelent for making scooter riders eat smoke - most of whom have it coming.

The one thing I have started to notice is the brakes are a bit of a let down. It might be worth purchasing braided hoses or something.

The 8,000rpm powerband, I have to agree, is a real treat but I would like more top speed. I might have it tuned a little at some stage.

Passengers find the tourque a little scary even when using good clutch control. Some say they think they're going to "fall off", feel that the grab rails are in a poor position and would prefer one in front of them instead.

I added neons but the rear tyre melted onto them, not enough space so don't bother with the flashyness.

The fairing looks really ugly but would would make travel at speed comfier so if long distance comuting is 'yo thang' then you might consider buying the CB500S. The unfaired version in my opinion looks much meatier and therefor far nicer.

As far as I can remember insurance is group 8, so if your in your early 20's and looking for speed, total all weather reliability and rider (not pilion) comfort then buy it. Though, if I remember correctly, the Suzuki GS500 is a little cheaper on price and insurance.

Before eveyone starts laughing, I bought a 250 Superdream in 1981, I rode the bike everywhere until I retired it in 1998 (It still runs and is in my garage looking very well). I thought it time to treat myself to another bike and with advice settled for a 600 Suzuki Bandit. I nursed it and hardly used it, but one fine summers evening, I had occasion to stick the brakes on (probably day/dreaming!) Ended up with two cracked ribs, broken big toe and shaken. Never trusted that front brake again so whilst in the dealers having an oil change etc, looked at the gleaming red 500s stood there in the ranks. I ended up leaving the Suzuki there and coming home with the Honda! I had to pay a grand to get it, I probably lost out but I was delighted to get another pair of slippers! thats how the Superdream had beome to feel to me. Since having the CB500 I have been on charity runs earning money for the Air Ambulance etc. I trust that bike round the corners etc, never a thought of it going from beneath me. On one of the events I slipped onto the motorway just as a pack of biggies were passing, I tucked in behind them and stayed with them to the venue. It was the first time I had let it rip and by gum it was excellent. Super little bike, a pleasure to own Dennis BEAN

This is my 2nd big bike the 1st being a kawasaki z 650 that will not stop or go around corners. i wanted a fazer but i found that no one would take the kawasaki in part exchange but i was offered the cb500 for the same price as i was going to top up with finance so i could keep the kawasaki & have a new bike. The 1st thing i noticed was the fairing was quite ugly but i took it out on the test ride any way. The bike dealer was quite worried as i was out on the bike for nearly 2 hours as i was enjoying the ride so much i put the deposit straight down when i got back.
I use it every day as i travel 45 miles on the motorway to get to work & the only thing i can say i dont like about it is that its too quiet when the motorway is jammed as no one can hear me filtering hence they dont move over to let me pass.
But with the fairing i can travel at 110 mph all day if i had no worries about speed traps or traffic.
riding the bike is like sitting in a comfy armchair with a rockett attached but then it fits me very well.
As for running costs the fuel, tyres, servicing, & insurance is pennies (oh & the road fund licence for the year has gone down to £45 for the year) so up to date i'm over the moon with my cb500s. :-D

The best value bike in the whole of Bikedom. Cheap, reliable, sensible, economic but wait! What's that lurking around the 8000rpm mark? A shocking powerband is waiting to make you grin! Confidence-inspiring neutral handling and 120mph. What more do you want for a grand or two?

I love this bike simply because it has started every time so far. It has excelent storage under the seat and parts are easy enough to get hold of. The seat is comfy enough but whith a pilion on the back they end up sliding forwards every time you break and puching you into the tank. Cornering feels like my old trials bike, you can really throw it around as it's so light. It's a good, reliable comuter, it doesn't try to be anything else.

I had one of these for about a year before changing it for a Yamaha 600N,which while being an excellent machine lacks the character of the little Honda.I regretted the change almost immediately, missing the 500`s superior handling and economy, the Yam is a lot smoother and better for cruising but lacks the fun factor of the CB.I actually came close to doing a deal with Tim Pestridge, writer of anothr review on this page, his bike being identical to my old one but sdly that fell through.I`d still be interested if anyone else fancies an exchange,I`m actually considering a new CB500 as my next bike failing that,I suppose that tells you all you need to know.I have been riding bikes for 25 years and the CB is the best I`ve had so far, economical, fun and easy to live with and ride-a perfect machine for those of us who ride all year round.
