Bought secondhand six years ago. Rattled a lot and drove my nuts but with care and after spending lots of money in replacing worn parts its now my "poor-man's BMW". Real value for money. I love my Hyundai Stellar.
I own a 1989 Hyundai Stellar Prima 2.0L GSL. Bought back in 1992. The engine block is porous and seeps oil onto the starter and ruins them. When I replaced it the auto shop said it was a known fault. Now at 130,000 Klm the bearing has packed up in the water pump, causing the pump to grind and graunch. Has anyone had experience with the internal water pump. can the pump be repaired without taking the head off the engine? Thanks. My e-mail is [Log in to view email] RJ
1987 Hyundfai Stellar, Do not use after market engine air filters, ie. Fram or Bosch, Both of these filters absolutely do no fit properly and will destroy your engine. I would guess that most of the premature engine failures are caused by this problem on the 2 liter engine. My Stellar had 150,000 K when I baught it. It smoked a little when I got it and discovered the air filter problem soon after purchase. My Stellar now has over 300000K on it and the engine is getting weak but still runs smooth. I have never put a tune up on this engine, I think it has the original spark plugs in it. The 2 L engine is a Mitsubishi design from aprox. 1977 and up used in some Dodge cars. Automatic overdrive is Borg-Warner had no problems has very high OD step up at least 30%_40% Problems: inside door handles I have replaced 4 handles, and Bosch alternater I replaced it with a Delco with a self exciting regulater, I had to make a diferent mounting bracket for it and use a smaller oil filter from an accent, but it is worth the effort because the old style internal regulater alternater can be rebuilt about $20.00 or less for parts. Paid $1800.00 Canada for it at a dealership it was worth aprox . $ 1200.00 privately and it was a good straight clean car. Not Japanese quality but I would have never taken 2 Ford Tempo's or Chev Cavaleer's for it, partly because they are easey to fix even if there are problems. We have 3 other Hyundai's including a 2001 accent.

1987 Hyundai Stellar 2L SOHC 8valve eng. Great car. Fun to drive. Hard to part with. Bought new $11K. Now 250,000 km with no major problems. Performs reliably. Easy and fairly inexpensive to repair. Parts still readily available at reasonable cost. Excellent value for the money. Highly recommend.

I just bought the 1985 Stellar. It has only two chips of rust on the driver side. Probably from a shopping cart. The car is in incredible shape. The motor works terrific but I was told by the previous owner that it needs a little oil once a month. It can blow blue smoke when starting up but not on a regular basis and not a lot of smoke. It has a little power when you 'punch' the passing gear but other wise it just floats along peacefully and quietly. The ride is terrific. Smooth. It has a great heater in it. I live in a Northern Cold Climate and it keeps up well with the heater. I have to say the gas milage is unreal awesome! This is a great little winter car. Oh , By the way , I paid $200.oo for it.

as the last comment i also found the car slows down when you touch the gas to quickly, and further more mine also smokes at the rear. The biggest problem is that this car is now becoming a money pit everyweek somthing new breaks, and i honestly say i will never buy a hyundai again

I have a 1987 Hyundai Stellar. It has 63rwhp, pretty low for such a big car, but if you drive it hard, it's not too bad. It's my first car, and it's a very good first car, but I'm looking for something faster now.

theyre not as bad as some people think, long as you look after them. any car will self destruct when not looked after.
