I have owned or run them as as company cars. The G-Wagen, or G-Series as it's now known, is an outstanding off-roader featuring cross axle diff-locks which give it the edge. Beautifully engineered to last, the G has no peers when it comes to sheer presence on the road. Often deemed ugly by the uninitiated, its military roots are blatantly obvious. Although badged Mercedes, the G is actually built by Steyr Daimler Puch (Now Magna Steyr) of Graz Austria. Although available since the late seventies, the vehicle was never that popular in UK, probably due to lack-lustre marketing by MBUK who never seemed to know what to do with it. However, those who have experienced them, tend to love them and the car is currently enjoying something of a come-back. Now only available new with LHD, the modern G is a very different machine indeed. All the bells and whistles and mind-blowing performance, which, for some, has rather spoilt the original concept of sturdy, practical workhorse.
As somebody once said, "G-Wagen: the thinking man's Range Rover"
The G Wagon or G Class is the original prestige 4x4 utility vechile. The design hasn't really changed much for the last 10 years and unlike the M Class is all angular lines and flat surfaces. Soon to be available from Mercedes dealerships after a four year hiatus in the UK. Superb looks and interior comfort combined with rarity value will make this a must have with record producers and the idle rich alike. How does it drive...
