I bought a used Club 40 for a friend who urgently needed a PC. With a new hard drive, 320mb ram ( 256mb DIMM added, 64 preinstalled ) and Windows 2000 it makes a capable, if somewhat slow workstation.. ideal for Ofice 2000, internet, Mp3s and playing the sims though! Yes, its a slow processor, but the machine can be made to work reliably. I will shortly be adding a K6/2 chip to speed things up a bit more.
PB club 40....what can you say! CPU upgrades are limited by the multiplier/motherboard (66mhtz).I replaced the Cyrix with a AMD K6-2 350 but it only ran at 333 max because of the motherboard spec (doh). The memory issue (28 not 32 mb ram) is a by-product of the onboard graphic chip "stealing" 4 mb system memory for its own use....this can be reclaimed with a PCI card. The cyrix chip has a poor "floating point" process and makes for poor games application....its just not fast enough.....this was probably a good machine in 97....a year BEFORE I bought it...but it was my first and didnt know any better. Now it "lives" in components (cd-rom,hard drive)in other...more capable machines...lol.
my Club 40 came with a Cyrix processor, and 32mb SIMM RAM, is there any way i could upgrade the CPU?? i've already upgraded the 32mb to 64mb, but the only thing is that its very expensive! can i put DIMM memoryin my SIMM slots?? some1 please help.
My first and only PC so far - a Club 40. 3 major crashes in as many months. Cost me £800. Poor value by today's standards. 300Mhz processor, 28 (NOT 32Mb RAM) and a pathetic 2Gig hard disk. The only extras were the Windows 98 disks (which included Word 97 - excellent) I had to buy a scanner, printer and modem. I have seen PCs at the same price which have all this included for the same price, plus have 10+ gig hard disks and 700_Mhz processors. God help us!
Mine came with AMD K6-2 366Mhz processor, and a friends came with a Cyrix one. I don't know why this is, but I do know that I got the better deal. Mine is a fine home computer in all respects, but certainly nothing special. Upgradability is possible but limited... PCI 3D cards only for instance is a downfall, but if you don't wanna play games then who cares?
I was informed that the PB Club 40 was now 'End of Range'. Processor speeds of Computers are getting so fast, 350mhz was entry level last year, this year 700mhz is becoming entry level.
This computer is not ideal for games unless it has 64mb RAM. the cyrix processor is very slow and the leads are always popping out.

Assessment reflects the fact that my club 40 was bought in France at half price. Harddisk went kaput after18 months. replaced with Maxtor 15Gbyte--excellent help from staff at Wichen in Holland but phone expensive. Modem boardpacked up 3 months ago. replaced for £17. Otherwise very reliable but slow by today's standards.

300MHz cyrix CPU, 28MB RAM. All the drivers are stored on the HDD. To install a new OS from scratch you need to FDISK first :( That means all the drivers are lost. Customer service is non-exsistant even with an extended warranty on the product. The software helpline numbers are dead. The hardware support can't deal with software problems. Would only buy this PC is I was paid to. My friend bought this PC before we met.

Cost £812 (Jan '98) with desk, printer, scanner and software. Only 1 major crash needing reboot in 2 years, but many minor crashes. Confused that Cyrix 300 only runs at 233 MHz and so-called 32 MB RAM is actually 28 MB. Decent starter level machine, but now needs urgent upgrading.
