This 97 YZF1000R is by far the best bike I have ever owned, and I have owned quite a few bikes. I usually get rid of bikes after I get bored with them, this one is a keeper, had it for four years now. The only downside is it burns oil, I don't understand why Yamaha would overlook a flaw like this. There aren't a whole lot of aftermarket parts available for it in the US.
I bought my Ace new end of '97. It has done 48000km. In the 6 years I've had it, I have not changed as much as a light bulb on it apart form tyres, brake pads, sprockets and chain. Ultra reliable, fantastic handler and mighty midrange punch. It will keep up with the latest super bikes in a mountain pass and might just embarrass a few of them! If you want power, serious scratch-ability, long distance touring and two up riding, forget anything else, this is the answer. In my opinion, the best all rounder your money can [Log in to view email]
Have a 2001 Thunderace (23000 Km) and this bike certainly suits the open roads of Western Australia. I Don't have a problem with burning oil but clutch is a little noisy when in neutral and clutch out. Considering an after market exhaust and rejetting carbs to get a few more ponies out of it and will let all know how this goes. As I have had the bike for 10 months and have a good feel for the bike and have on a couple of occassions explored the absolute limitations of the bike and suggest if anyone else try's the same, to wear a nappy. Love the Bike, love the all round performance, love the reliability and I will keep this bike in top condition for some years to come until its a classic. Pal Rod Western Australia
bought a 97 Ace in July, 41st birthday pressent to self, first proper superbike for 16 years, have moved the footrests back 4 inches which helps, this required re-routeing the exhaust a little but has made a big diffrence to the comfort, I have also dropped the back end down an inch or so by making longer links for the mono shock. Still handles perfectly, I use the bike every day, love the thing to bits. Does burn oil big time how ever, as long as the revs are kept low it's fine, but the momment you start hitting the red line the sump just emptys in scant few miles. Some vibaration felt if throttle opened to quickly in to high a gear, but in normal riding the motor is so smooth that you would swear it was an electric motor or a turbine unit rather than a piston engine, power delivery is amazing, I rode this bike across a well churned up muddy field (rock & blues custom show), feet up no problem effortless, not bad from a machine that loves to put it's front wheel in the air at speeds of over 110 mph. Great bike, only real problem is that it sets off every speed camara you pass.
A machine totally underrated by the majority of fireblade zealot press pundits . The pulse quickening performance needs no comment other than to advise it's quicker than the blade at every point to 150mph, then the weather protection, riding and pillion positions are the best imaginable in the tourer/sports bike compromise. Ace.
Bought a 98 bike in June, it had done 7000 miles, still mint condition, Im so pleased I bought it and not a Fireblade or R1, the bikes only as good as the rider and can easily keep up with the best. Ive tweeked the suspension settings to make it firmer and added a bubble screen, the bike does use oil as im sure most of these do, im on Bridgestone 020s and they are great. Some vibration about 4000and a false neutral between 2nd and 3rd. Overall, a wicked bike and ive no intention of swapping it.
just sold mine 2000model 25k on the clock after 3yrs was sad to see it go done 160mph on the I.O.M two up eats tyres if you fling it about.never had the oil drinking prob, but it was run in by me from new two up touring with luggage is as easy as scratchin on it.i wish my new fjr 1300 was as good as this.dont hesitate buy one
just bought an ace no problems so far would appreciate any advice on oil and other problems encountered as i am also a new rider been riding 4 13months thanks nik
It's all about the motor and chasis. The modified FZR motor is literally bullet-proof with gobs of power throughout the rev range above 2000 rpm. Handling is exceptional given it's size, weight and geometry. Runs with and beats out most 750's because of the short wheelbase, super-rigid frame and roll-on power that leaves most bikes appearing as a blip in your rear view mirror in a matter of a few seconds. Surprises for a 1-Liter sportbike include a comfort wide saddle, respectable seating position for 200 mile treks without wrist aches or numbing, good protection behind a well-designed fairing, and brakes that are the best I have ever experienced in my 30+ years of riding. Overall I rate the YZF1000R as an excellent motorcycle with a practical design beyond that of the typical "tank-slapper" profile. No bike can be fun if you need a chiropractic adjustment before reaching the 100-mile mark unless imagine is your top criteria for purchase. The YZF is not for everyone, but if you ever had a desire to own a top-notch liter class sportbike with incredible power, quick neutral handling and amazing driveability.....this is it. In my most unbiased opinion, there has never been anything out there quite like the YZF1000R and nothing likely to come along too soon. If you are lucky enough to have one parked in your garage.....you know exactly what I mean.
i bought this today cos it looks good needs battery and all the plastics and clocks to go back to original as it is streetfighter style at the moment.taking it to spain next month hopefully so i will add review after then.will sell next month on my e bay shop BIKES-N-BITS.if you have bits for me or want to buy it email me at [Log in to view email] or look for gray54321 on ebay
My Thunderace has let me down just once in the 3 years I have had it, and I think this was only because I was running on fumes and a bit of crap got into the fuel line. I have dropped the front sprocket from 17 to 16 teeth as I'm not one top speed but acceleration, it's really funny because my bike's fairing is held together by cable ties and masking tape, (I bought the bike as a damaged repairable and still not got round to fitting a new fairing) and quite a few times I have pulled up at lights etc. and there has been some other riders on Blade's, R1's, ZX9r's etc. posing like they do, I wish I could of seen the look on there faces after I blew them into infinity. I intend to have a go at sprinting in April 2002, check out yzf1000r.co.uk.
I HAVE A 1997 YZF 1000R. I THINK THIS BIKE IS CRAZY! SHE IS BLUE AND BLACK AND SHE IS FASTER THEN SHE IS GOOD LOOKING. HER TOP SPEED IS AT 270K. THE ONLY THING THAT I AM NOT TOTALLY SOLD ON IS THE SEAT IS NOT SPORTY LOOKING. I MUCH RATHER THE NEW R1 STYLE. I AM LOOKING FOR THE PART THAT TAKES THE PLACE OF THE BACK SEAT I AM NOT SURE THE PROPER NAME FOR IT. BUT IT MAKES THE BIKE ALOT NICER LOOKING. BUT AS FOR POWER AND SPEED SHE WILL KEEP UP OR BEAT THE BEST. [Log in to view email]

have had ace 5yrs done 68000 miles and never a problem, rear shock changed after 20000 as a bit tired, proflex did the job and added ohlins springs at front too compliment, corners on rails now. No point useing fullysynthetic oil as can make clutch slip and it drinks it anyway. basicly brilliant bike that u can throw anything at, will never part with it. STEVE PUGH.
