I recently purchased a 1979 kawasaki z200 it had been stood for 16 years. The fuel had gone solid in the petrol tap pipes and carburater.I had to chip it out with a srewdriver and soak it in paint thinners having done this I serviced it. had it MOted I find you can run it at 70mph all day lacks a bit of grunt uphill and heavy on fuel for a small bike.
I have 1978(s reg) brown Z200 its totally original and very good condition, only done 9k,front disc, elec' start, full m.o.t and runs like a dream and has bin used on and of for work.i'v had it four wonderfull years but i need to sell it to make room for a new investment,i have no idea what my little'Z' is worth or how much to ask for it,has anybody any sensible suggestions?contact me on [Log in to view email]
I've owned a 1979 z200 with only 8000 miles on the clock now for about 4 months. Never had to use the choke, kickstarts first time and is so much fun to ride. these wee bikes can take a proper battering (not like the bikes of today) and i believe have a vintage street cred of their own. I recommend them to anyone, whether its your first bike or if you are a streetfighter enthusiast. Surprisingly nippy round the city. No problems with it at all, nor had the previous owner.
I ve had my Z200 for arround 10 years outstandingly relable little machine. Im the 3rd owner from new (it used to be a police bike) 16500 miles and at the mo its in bits as I am fully restoring it. the only thing I find now is that so many parts are hard to find and Kawasaki wont print out the factory manual for me ( its deleted ) But they seem quite happy to send me photo copies sertain pages
Now only available as a cheap second hand hack. I write this review because of the sterling service this little air cooled single provided in the time I had it. The only thing I had to replace on the bike after I obtained it as a ten yr old on its third owner (the first probably being the police using it as a trainer), where the rear shocks, battery, and the electronic ignition box of tricks needed repairing. After abuse as my student run about and as a dispatch tool in London I found the reliability and performance of the bike as good as you could ever expect. If youv'e hit hard times you do a lot worse than commute on one of these.

I was give my Z200 by a friend' Father as a non-runner. It had been left outsidefor about 7 years, and the owner thought it was junk and was more than happy for me to take it! I had to push it home, as it would not start, it also looked filthy, when I finally reached home and looked more closely I realised when I wiped the mudguard that much of the bike had been covered in grease or oil,(it was sored under an old tarpaulin) Anyway after a clean the bike came up looking new! A new battery, and it turn over straight away! I had to remove the old petrol and clean out the carburator, mainly the main jet (gummed up fuel) and it started straight away. It was the electic start model and everything worked fine, the horn sounding very weak even after its connections had been cleaned up, the lights were not great, but OK for town riding. It had 7000 on the clock when I was given it & 1 owner who has toured Germany with his wife pillion, then layed up. The little Z200 did me 2 years solid service, the only problem the bushes in the starter motor wore out, leving me having to kick start it. Eventually I adapted some car bushes to fit and the starter worked again. It was a great bike to learn on after passing my test as a 17 year old, and never let me down despite it living outside and not being cleaned that often! I still have the bike in the garage, needing a little love and attention. A new brake caliper (it warped-the caliper not the disc). The front barake being a cable operated single piston caliper and was not great. Today it would be considered terrible. The rear brake was a drum and was progressive, and capable of locking the wheel at will. Engine braking also helped, all my learning was done on little 2 Strokes. Top speed was about 75mph, and it would cruise at 65-70 as long as the wind was blowing a gale. Strong winds could lower speeds to 65mph. It would do the same speed with a pillion! The fastest it ever went was 88mph! (downhill 2up fully laden with camping gear, and it was pretty stable). Handling was ok and it could be hustled along through bends at 70mph easily enough on a twisty road I new very well! One day I plan to return the Z200 back on the road, I have 2 other road bikes. I have now owned it 13years and not ridden it since 1994. But it is about the same condition as I got it. It wouldn't take long to get it back on the road. I have a spare brake caliper and will need to change the battery and clean the Petrol tanks and carburator again. Fresh oil, New plug and I hope that will be it!
