i have two of these at present and have owned about 10. great fun easy to work on and with a few tweaks shock the saxo, nova, fiiesta etc boys! i have a 1990 last edition in flame red with grey leather i love it to bits and will never sell it it will probably be my cofin!!! the other a 1988 in black is a nice looker but is rotten not worth doing so its for spares. none for sale though. classic car mags make me laugh in their price guides they all put they are easy to find!parts are everywhere! and cond 1 worth £800 ha i would love to find the cars and bits everywhere wouldnt u lot!
Brother bought one as his first car. It was one of the first ones with the moving boost gauge (Orange LED type thing) and as far as we were aware no limiter on the booster. The only visual upgrade was to colour code the insert part of the alloys to red to match the cream/red body and add ultra low profiles.
For the time it rocked - he once raced a porsche on the motorway, after several miles up the M66 (excellent no cameras, no police) off the speedo, the other driver pulled over and reckoned there were times down the hills when the metro hit 127mph....(there were a lot of other upgrades, the most expensive I can remember was a competition cam) obviously not a rolling road but imagine about ton ten about 1 inch above the road. He used to give us lifts and a lot of mates used to give us stick (even way back then the metro was kinda laughed at), until they had a lift too. Personally i'd love to get another, although I do like my current 220SDi
i am having difficulty finding the "fuel pump relay" on my mg metro turbo, its a g reg, 1989 can any kind soul please help me? the haynes book tells me its under the bonnet........well thats a big space to look in [Log in to view email]
I have been extremely lucky over the last fortnight, i had the pleasure of a G reg Metro turbo falling in my lap for nowt, and she's in excellent nick. I must say that i was slightly more than ecstatic cos i had rebuilt a mark 1 from scrap 6 years ago and after 2 years of hard work some flash git in a new saab decided he would plough into the side of it an write it off, so i am chuffed, as for the comments on this page; i agree with alot, yes they could benefit from a little extra boost from time to time, but overall they do go like stink.....a good example is my neighbour (has an rs turbo)but still cant beat me off the lights lol. all these little beasts ever need is some TLC and they will run forever, and with the standard pushrod A series engine, they are piss easy to work on, even if you are short of space. there is an excellent chance that my little beasty will be on the market soon after a paint job. and for all those who have hot hatches an reckon they stand a chance round tight bends or from the lights........kiss me tail pipe lol
I am 18 and have been given an MG Turbo, it has had fitted a twin exit exhaust, a set of 14/185 Raceline alloys. The windows have been tinted, the rust has gone and it has recived a respray in Red Pearl paint. A set of VW Golf Mk4 Headlights in the front and some Pug 106 rear clusters, the bonnet has been extended and the engine rebuilt. I have fitted a few extra's to the engine dump valve, boost valve, oil breether, and more. I thnik the car looks a treat and handels well the performance seems to be alot better than alot of opinions on here!
What are you all on about?? Metro Turbo's are like gold dust. Every mini owner wants them. they outrun and 1.6GTI ive ever had. Im looking for a metro turbo engine and the turbo off a montego. Their from the 80's I know. But most of the clapped out turbos have been replaced by Hybrids!! As for those XR2 sheds who needs one? Not me. Ive got a PUG206 GTi (2.0l) & they fly past me o-60.
i used to own a metro turbo many years ago i thought it was exellent i have been trying to find it again but it as either been scraped or has moved out of the district. it was a two tone metro blue top and grey bottom it was a d reg and it had the wrong wheels on it had the mg 1300 wheels instead. i loved it but had to get rid of it because of the £1000 a year insurance but now i am a little older i hope i can find a other one as they are getting rare. i liked the driving style it was like driving a gocart i payed £750 for it in 1997 but i only kept it for 6 months. it never broke down but when i got rid of it the turbo was smoking and it was useing a lot of oil and when you put your foot down it would veer to the right.
"THE MG MONTEGO TURBO WAS THE FASTEST 4DOOR CAR IN THE WORLD. THATS INCLUDIND ANY FERRARIS PORCHES, ANYTHING!!!! " thats cos they did not make a 4 door car idiot... and you forget cars like the golf limited that was 190bhp, (112 pushes a golf 0-60 in 8.6) and the 16v G60 engine had a LOT more torque, i think he better lear about cars...
the metro turbo was a very powerful car for its time and was very refined but that was almost 16 years ago! what do you expect, escort cosworth quality!
Metro was the successor to the Mini. The Metro Turbo was supposed to be the spiritual successor to the Mini Cooper.............
The design brief was almost identical to that of the Coopers': take a practical little motor, make it go like s**t off a shovel, make it corner at absurd speeds and stop with eyeball popping g-force.
Unfortunately, development of this car was done by the marketing and styling departments and it's unlikely that any engineers ever got to put their ideas forward.
Outwardly, the car looks quite promising. Full body kit (colour matched on later versions), ventilated front discs, alloys and fat rubber, jazzy seats, chubby steering wheel, extra clocks and somewhat tarty red seat belts!
Pop the bonnet though and the horrible truth starts to dawn. The good old 'A' series motor sits staring at you, resplendent with the lowest tech turbo installation you will ever see! What should have been a fire breathing monster of a motor, is instead a low pressure damp squib! All it does is eat petrol rather quicker than a Metro should.
At full chat with the Turbo singing, there is barely, if any, performance advantage over a conventional twin carb 1275 Mini, 20 years its senior. All your hopes and dreams fade and die the first time an XR2 (the lukewarmest of hot hatches) passes you.
We could talk about the wonderful grip and roller-skate handling but what's the point? You haven't got the power to keep up with any hot hatch as soon as the road straightens.
Don't write in and quote manufacturers' figures at me as we've had two of these and they were both disappointing slugs.
If you really want a quick metro try the later 1400 K Series Sport, or maybe a 6R4.
i have owned 3 mg turbos and loved evry 1 of them they are as much fun to drive as i mini if not better i currently own an 89 black turbo im the 2nd owner and i love it

The Metro Turbo is very rare now and most have been gutted for the engine for the mini 's out there. They are becoming classic's the ones that are left and ever increasing value. when is first came out in 1982 it was a Hot hatch. You can also drive it around off boost and benifit from the 1.3 MPG. The early turbo's also have a really smart TURBO boost gauge.
The MG Metro Turbo is a great cheap fast little car. The TURBO model is gettin very rare now sadly and most Metros have long gone. The MG Metro is a very underated car and ment to be 'better' cars like nova sr and fiesta xr2 owners cant understand why a Metro is out performing them ;-)
The G60 is a lot newer car. By the time tat was on the market there were already many quicker 4 doors. Intergrale 16v. Monty came out in '85 could hit 60 in 7.2(the slowest figs I've seen 7.5)sec when a Ferrari Mondial took 7.4(in 3.2 '86 spec and 7.8 in 3.0 spec)

Not really quick as standard because the boost pressure is modulated.Up the boost pressure to about 8-10 PSI with a bleed valve and these things are mad!!!The only trouble is,the metro turbo compression is really high to overcome MPG problems and the high boost pressure cannot be run for long periods of time or rapid melting of the pistons will occur. This is overcome by fitting a remote bleed valve inside the car so the boost can be turned down when not needed.
