I bought an early Elan +2 that was restored a few years ago to a very good standard. I use the car daily (usually on the 20 mile round trip to work) and have found it to be reliable in all respects. A good Elan +2 is an outstanding car with good performance, handling and braking abilities. Aesthetically, these are stunning cars with well appointed interiors and good build quality for their period. My advice to anyone looking to buy an Elan, like any classic, is to gain a thorough understanding of the subject matter first, look at lots of examples, and buy the very best you can. Separating the good from the bad isn't difficult once you've seen a few cars for sale. Buy a good Elan +2, use it regularly, maintain it properly and drive it sensibly and you will rewarded accordingly.

My lotus elan is now restored (I broke the chassis...see below/above) I toyed with selling it and getting something else, but as soon as I started it up and drove down the road...needless to say it is still in my garage, although not used anywhere lke I used to. Just needs a tune up, the carbs seem to get gummed up while standing...

the most fantastic car i have ever owned. just love it. Once the engine starts up thats all the motivation you need to get it all sorted, its a 70s car that drives like a modern, I've had porsche 911 and have to say that the lotus beats them hands down, now if there was a 300bhp engine swap , then they'd beat the 911 off the line aswell !

I have had one now for 5 years, Used it every day for the first 2, never ever had any issues. Had a spark plug blow out the block after some idiot 'specialist' cross threaded the spark plug during service, so do your own servicing!. sadly cracked the chassis during over enthusiastic racing. Car is presently waiting for new paint. Have replaced chassis. yeah it can be expensive particularly under the hood, but every, every time I drove it I smiled like a teenager in love. fantastic car. hmmm, its midnight, maybe I should get out to the garage and start spraying....

Wonderful drivers car, however some of the maintenace gets a bit expensive. My first experiance of this was the replacement of the water pump, which had managed to wear it's way through the front engine cover.. Total cost inclusing new rad £2,500.... half what it's worth!!. Still got it though and once I have restored the interior it will be ace.
